started to skim through Milestones of Millard and one thing led to another Grandpa Beckwith’s book came to mind and gathering it up I began to read about Marjum Pass Do you know how Marit i jum Pass got there was a boy in Deseret who had been christened William Valentine'but'' the children wouldn’t use that handle and they came up with the name Marjum as his nickname Marjum and his dad “freighted” from towns in Millard west to Pioche through Antelope This Springs on Swazey Mountain pass was very annoying because it was steep and the trail was on a slick rock that played havoc with heavy wagons One day Marjum mounted his horse at Antelope Pass and rode south under the rims of the House Range looking for a pass or canyon breaking through He went along about 7 miles when a low place attracted his attention but no canyon was there Then on riding to the edge of this low place to his astonishment cutting sharply down the mountains was the beginning of a canyon He guided his horse down the twisting tortuous way figuring out if a road would be feasible while he looked over Tule Valley On the way back he noted what work would have to be done to make a road in the bottom of the canyon He thought it could be done with the cooperation from the neighbors and teamsters The road was built and called Marjum’s Pass to honor the finder But today we leave off the apostrophe and the s After that bit of interesting news I was gain glancing through Grandpa’s the headline— book and found Meteorite 9th Largest Found in United States Come to find out two Japanese American boys Akio Ujihara and Hoshio Nishimoto at the Topaz relocation camp had been searching for some ordinary stones and got more than they bargained for The Meteorite was 164 pounds and was the 9th largest in the United States This meteorite was composed of iron some nickel cobalt phosphorus and sulphur The finders shipped the meteorite to the Smithsonian Institution for display Today in the Highlights magazine that comes for the younger children there was an interesting article about Winslow Homer It seems that as a child he wasn’t to studious and didn’t do very well in school He would rather walk in the woods Instead of listening to the teachers he would drawn sketches Winslow’s mother was a painter and encouraged him but the father was appalled by his poor grades thus giving him an ultimatum: he could take a job as a clerk in a clothing store or go to work as an apprentice to a printing shop He jumped at the printing shop offer He did very well illustrating events in the news Soon he became a When the Civil first rate illustrator War broke out he was sent to the front to draw battle scenes but concentrated on realistic sketches of Union soldiers at work or relaxing behind the scenes He is recognized today as one of the artists America has ever greatest produced The library offers a wide range of facts and interesting material Come in an see what you can find Petersen
