impressed with the natural beauties of Millard County during a recent walking tour of the area Mr Tabor is on a 1700 mile walk from the Pacific Coast to the Continental Divide He passed through Kanosh this month and asked for directions over the Pahvant Mountains to Richfield He said he was very impressed with the knowledge local people in Kanosh had of their mountains "This was a big change from Nevada where it was often difficulat to find anyone who had spent much time in or knew anything about their areas Many of the men in Kanosh hunt every season and a few sometimes serve as guides into the wilder county” Mr Tabor noted The naturalist said this is the second long walk across the wild parts of western American that he has made He takes his notes and photographs and presents exhibitions such as one he did for the Oakland Public Library He said among the highlights of his trip through Millard County was climbing Notch Peak: “wild and spectacular” visiting Sevier Lake: “a real gem" and finding native grasses in the western part of the county: “seldom seen these days” he said The abundance of wildlife spawned by the Sevier Lake also pleased the explorer “I saw a colony of grey foxes on the shores of the lake and a fair amount of crustaceans in the water assume both species have thrived since the lake recently filled up” he noted “I am really surprised the lake does not have some kind of wildlife reserve status and that it does not get more visitation by people It is trully unique and won’t be there for long” Mr Tabor said The Kanosh stop marked 921 miles for the hiker since leaving the Ano Nuevo State Reserve near Santa Cruz California on Dec 16 1985 Other highlights of the trip have been the California Coast and Redwoods the Canyon of the South Fork Merced River Yosemite Valley and a portion of the John Muir Trail under four feet Pre-schoole- rs Christine Schoppe Director of the Snow College Early Childhood is looking for tervention Service children in walking and running and used for small muscle coordination holding a spoon or pencil” Schoppe said She also indicated that late toilet training is sometimes an indicator of a developmental delay but not always Downs Syndrome Celebral Palsy and other birth defects may be the cause for delays also ac 5 spectacular i r! cfev V'rT'V - ’ 0 i STEVE TABOR NATURALIST says Millard County's wild areas are Services to the Handicapped program has the encouragement and of support of the local department Social Services" Mrs Schoppe said An independent utility bill vestigator will begin work this week on several cases of high and unexplained power bills in the Delta area Joseph Ingles of the Utah Committee of Consumer Services said T uesday that Phil Snelgrove an “independent utility bill auditor” has committed to wotk on the cases and that he will likely be paid by the state for his services though so far no money has been guaranteed Mr Snelgrove told the However Chronicle Progress he will take the cases despite no committment by the state to pay He said it is in his professional interest to do so “This is my area of expertise and these cases appear want to do the wotk to be unusual if for no other reason than to expand my field of endeavor" Mr Snelgrove said The independent auditor has a w ide variety of commercial clients and is to UP&L officials He has done independent untility auditing for the Millard County School District Health Care and Doves grocery market chain Mr Snelgrove’s committment to work on the Delta cases makes good on promise by the Committee of Consumer Services to launch a special into why in several cases power bills have doubled tripled and quadrupled almost overnight for many average power consumers in the Delta area conTwo of those complaining sumer appeared before the state committee at a Delta meeting in June It was at that time Mr Ingles the committee's executive secretary was askmembers to do ed by committee something about the cases "In nine years with the committee have never seen anything like these power bills” Mr Ingles said "The public has a right to expect something to happen and we now have a good man on the job" Mr Snelgrove said that lie has the names and account numbers of about 10 to 15 residents with power bill complaints He said that he will begin this week to meet with those people Solving the mystery of exceptionally high power bills is complicated by the a fact that problems can lie either in the individual home or business system or may be part of a larger problem in the UP&l system According to several aiea residents who complained to the committee in June local UP&l workers have checked and rechecked their home systems without finding why double and triple power consumption readings are showing up on their power meters The residents told the committee they are certain that they have not consumed the extra power which would justify the higher meter readings and higher power bills UP&L officials point to computer printout readings of meter boxes w hich apparently prove the power is going through the meters To this point UP&l has argued that extra power consumption must be caused by problems in the individual systems but not limited to such including things as faulty wiring faulty grounding coil burnout in heavy power users such as a water heater Even power theft has been investigated as a possible explanation American Cancer night in Fillmore features “old friend” Dick Nourse Saturday August 9 at the Tillmorc City North Park the East Millard Cancer Society is
