Education hasn’t improved we just found another way to avoid facing the overall problem Teachers are professionals They go to school to learn their profession just as doctors lawyers engineers etc go to school to learn their profession We should show our confidence in their abilities by paying comparable wages and giving them the opportunity to cerise their expertise Volunteers in the schools! thought that was just another ridiculous idea dreamed up by the experts from out of But teachers town to avoid hiring more the more have thought about it the more was peeved that private industry didn’t think of it first Maybe we can pattern how we run our business more after how government agencies run Heaven knows they have done so well Now think of all the money 1PP could have saved if they had built the plant with volunteers Think of all the profit margins businesses would have if we all used volunteers Of course we wouldn’t have the blackmail edge that schools have (for the good of our think we could be children) but creative and figure ways to get some fools to fall for our lines And it would sure keep the paid employees in line for fear they would be replaced with volunteers They would never ask for raises or fringe benefits Of course we would have to do a what campaign to get people to a volunteer should be They must work endless houis be on constant call be a real expei never complain never try to change conditions or go against TO THE EDITOR I I ? J Quality education? Education is my bag spent four years in college earning my Bachelor of Arts Degree Later while teaching fulland time mothering three children spent several years managing a home attending night school earning two am not unique graduate degrees am one of thousands of men and women across the country who are teachers Teachers are expected to improve themselves For what? Those of us who have experience and graduate degrees are told that we are too expensive If we are hired we receive credit for a maximum of five years experience This can mean a loss of $10000 Is ihis fair? workers receive $15 to $20 per hour and they have no papers to drag home with them To qualify to become a substitute teacher in Utah requires only a high How many of us school diploma ould entrust our children to a doctor or a dentist with such limited expertise? Where are the voices of school administrators and Board of Education members? Too often it appears that they are like the nouveau riches Once they reach the top or are in positions of power they forget what it was like to be poor-- to be mere teachers They fail to fight for smaller classes preparation time adequate salaries quality education The doctor prescribes valium to relieve stress The governor advocates to alleviate pressure in volunteers Both Utah’s overcrowded classrooms are merely placebos for they allow us to delay facing our problems Education is important and it costs money There are excellent teachers in Utah Help them help your children Dawn Carder USPS OR Eagles” would like to take the time to set the record straight concerning the officials and comments made by George Russell who wrote the article The first error in the article is that I live in Delta and that Sid Wagner is from Emery County have not lived in Delta for some 12 years while Sid never has lived in Emery County-was born and raised in Utah County The second fact which wish to point out is that the high school officials association has reviewed the game films The review of the game came from the film of the Manti Millard game which included all portions being questioned by Mr Russell As officials we feel we handled the game and the situations in a professional unbiased manner and did the best to our ability We have been backed up in this by the Utah County Officials Association The foul called on the Millard player in the second quarter was an accurate call as the video replay clearly shows made no foul call on the play simply stopped the clock and Wagner made the call on the Millard player for pushing Since there was no player control (the Millard player had fumbled a lob pass into the middle) the resulting contact was considered a push by the Millard player When there is no team control and the team which is fouled is in a one and one situation the fouled team will shoot free throws After administrating the free throws Coach Rose was given a technical for being off the bench which is a violation which states that a coach of rule cannot be off the bench except to go to the scorers table to request time out for a correctable error a spontaneous reaction to an outstanding play to tend to an injured or disqualified player or to signal for a time out This new ruling comes from federal Ofand state high school associations ficials don’t make the rules we merely do our best to enforce them Coach Rose was given a second technical for conduct The third unsportsmanlike technical was assessed against a Millard conplayer again for unsportsmanlike duct This technical stemmed from the officials asking the player three times for the ball and the player then throwing the ball away from the officials The next technical again for Rose being off the bench and arguing the 4th came for Rose grabbing Mr Wagner and spinning him around In Mr Russell’s article the third most obvious error was that gave an obscene hand gesture to the Millard can honestly sav players and crowd would nor do never have that anything like that The Utah County Officials Association Board of Directors has viewed the tape many times and have notified Wagner and myself that we made the have taught school proper decisions and been a coach and official for ten years and have always conducted myself in a proper and professional manner Sincerely Layne Y Mood) Spanish Fork UT Why not a permanent Millard County Fair in Deseret? On Feb 25 1986 the Millard CounWarren Jensen ty Commissioners Chairman A B Johnson and Mike Styler are to reach a decision on a permanent location of the Millard County Fair The commissioners have contacted the mayors of the various towns in an effort to learn how much real support could be expected from a given area This is all well and good But Let’s leave the fair in Deseret and build those fair and rodeo grounds up second to none in the state The fair started there Let’s leave it there It’s right It feels right I’d like to see the Jr Livestock at the same time I’d like to see the present livestock show barn sold and a new one constructed at Deseret in conjunction with the fair and rodeo Does any of this make sense to anyone other than me? If so why don’t we join forces and let the commissioners know? have already done that at their latest meeting in Delta My plea either fell on sympathic ears or the commissioners deserve an oscar for their acting! Residents of Deseret and Oasis are our friends above all let’s maintain that friendship and work towards fair and building up a traditional rodeo Why not? And why not start considering some fundraising idea to help the cause? Why not an auction?
