$1 35 per animal unit month (AUM) for the 1985 grazing season which begins March 1985 The $135 per AUM will be only slightly less than 1984 fees of $1 37 per AUM An AUM is the equivalent of the amount ol forage consumed bv in one month In announcing the new fee BLM Director Robert Burford said ranchers will lands pay about $125 million to graze their livestock on million in 1985 In Utah stockmen will pay a total of about $1 orest Service BLM and the US Department of Agriculture's By law to recompute the grazing fee annually using a legislatively established formula based on beef production costs This is the last year of a trial period for a grazing fee formula established by the Public Rangelands Improvement Act of 1978 The fee for 1985 decreased although ranchers received slightly more for their beef in 1984 because production costs went up more than the beef prices A portion of the grazing fee receipts is appropriated by Congress for rangeland improvement work and a percentage is returned to States where the grazing took place BLM and the forest Service are in the final stages of preparing a grazing fee study for presentation to Congress as required by the Public Rangelands
