Show Page 8 - Hiurs Mar LSPS Millard Count 2 1989 WM DHS swimming MHS gets the axe Well the 1989 Delta High School swim season is finally over And what were the results? Without a doubt the best ever Both the boys and girls qualified swimmers for the 3A Swimming and Diving Championships held at the BYU Richards Center February 17 and 18 The girls 200 Yard Medley relay finished 8th but was disqualified for an illegal stroke Though the infraction was not seen by the Delta coach it seemed odd to all coaches at the meet that 5 of 24 relays were disqualified Nonetheless this relay team has recorded the second fastest time in our short Kerry Matson and Jason North February 17 Millard boys' basketball team beat Delta for the victory axe The axe is becoming a tradition and is passed back and forth between the Rabbits and the Eagles for various sports activities The first quarter was close Millard was ahead by a basket Bill Freeman made a Stoney Myers had seven points cluding three out of five foul shots in the second quarter Millard retained a lead Delta tied up in the third Both teams entered the last quarter with points Millard kept up an excellent defense throughout the game With ten seconds lett in the game made two foul Delta’s Stansworth shots to tie the game Millard took the ball down the court Kelly Gillins sunk the ball as the buzzer went off The final scoie was Millard 36 to Delta 34 The pride of Millard is back! Jack Church said the gym was packed and the game was very “loud and exciting" all the way through Jack dicated he had never seen so much "red and blue” history The girls 4(XJ Freestyle relay finished in 9th place and gave the team an overall place of 17th out of 24 teams If the Medley relay team had not been the girls would have disqualified finished 13th Individually Julie Rose had a great swim in the 50 yard Freestyle Friday night after She finished 1th in 27 83 But to get there required a sw im off in the preliminaries after tying for 12th with a Springvillc girl at 2782 Julie prevailed by 4100s to make it into the consolation round f riday night In the 100 yard breaststroke Sherilyn Johnson also produced a 4th place finish in the finals on Saturday night It should be noted here that the slowest girl in this final was faster than the winwas a ning tune when Sherilyn freshman The boys qualified their 200 yard medley relay to an 1th place finish night Spencer Scoville finished in 7th place in the 100 yard breaststroke He had qualified 10th in the preliminaries Of the 12 linalists in this event 9 are seniors The boys teams looks like it will finish in the top 6 teams nest year as senior The the team will only lose girls will lose seniors but will have a stronger team nest because of incomand a returning ing freshman sophomore who didn’t swim this year due to illness Summer swim team will start in May Plan to swim with the team and Nevada travel with us to Arizona California and Southern Utah PetrolaneQuality Delta has a rough time at Region by Corey Larsen team parhe boys basketball ticipated in the Region tournament this riday and Saturday past Thursday They had a rough night on Thursday against the Manti Templars where they were beaten bVM with Rob Fowles having the high score for the Rabbits with 20 Kevin Bunker had 13 Matt Stanworth 6 Marty aughlin and John Willoughby each had 5 Brett Wardle got and Craig Thompson ended with Friday night the Rabbits took on the South Sevier Rams and beat them by Delta had a good score of night from the free throw line by hitting 72 percent while South Sevier only hit 60 percent Marty Laughlin had the high score with 15 followed by Rob Towles and Matt Stanworth received 12 Kevin Brett Wardle got 10 Bunker-Dale Craig Thompson-Jackson-Rhett Whatcott and Jim 2 and John had both Sloane This win over Willoughhby got South Sevier advanced the Rabbits to North against play on Saturday Sanpete Delta started out cold by to North Sanpete’s 18 but y getting the Rabbits came back by the end of the lourth quarter where the game was put into overtime with a score of The overtime was close with each team trading baskets but ending with North Marty Laughlin Sanpete ahead again had the high score with 15 Rob f Matt Stanworth and Kevin Bunker each had 8 John Willoughby had 3 Craig Thompson 2 and Jim for the night Sloane finished with Region vvas double elimination and so that game was the last game for the Rabbits The team appreciates all the support that Delta has given them a Junior bowling tournament held Our Jr Bowling League the "Plaza Pm Busters” just completed their local NJ BC (National Jr Bowling ChamAll pionships) qualifying tournament of the Jr Bowlers who competed in the local qualifying will be traveling to Salt Lake City on April st and 2nd to compete in the Utah State NJB C We will have a list of our local winners next week Every Tuesday from 9 am until 12 noon is Sr Citizens Day The Sr Citizens who bowl will tell you what a great time they have! has been a regular swimmer at the West Millard Pool for a long time Right before Christmas she fell and broke her arm Well What a Christmas present! breaking her arm didn’t break her spirits because as soon as the doctor gave her permission Carol was back to the pool Carol says coming to the pool has made all the difference in the world in her recovery She has gotten most of the useback in her arm now and is waiting patiently for the snow to leave so she can get back onto the golf course Even though Carol is going to start golfing again she is not going to give up swimming for she says swimming is what makes her feel great The Delta High Swim Team season is over for this school year and Delta just finished participating in the biggest swimming event of the season the 3A State Swimming and Diving ChamThe Delta swimmer did pionships great placing high in several events It is a young team with all but three swimmers coming back next year The Delta Swim Team should again be very competitive and place high in the team scores as well as the individual events The credit should be given to Coach Tom Hamilton for developing this fine swim team program Tom donates his time and talents so unselfishly to help the youth of this community become super swimmers Thanks Tom you are truly appreciated Now that the swim team season is open the pool will be open right after school at 3:30 pm Monday through Friday This afternoon schedule will continue until school is out on Thursday May 25 for the summer 10th Birthday Party For The West Millard Pool 10 years ago on March 24 of 1979 the West Millard Pool opened its doors for the first time A 10th birthday party will be held at the pool on Saturday March 25 from 12 noon to 5 p m to celebrate the occasion There will be free
