Why do some people feel desperate when not in a romantic relationship? In the last few years scientists have found specific receptors in the human brain for drugs such as heroin and Valium Why do these receptors exist? Could it be they asked we produce natural substances that fit these receptors? The answer is yes: they are called endorphins or enkephalins natural narcotics or antianxiety agents Also a natural amphetamine-liksubstance called phenylethylamine (PEA) has been identified from the human brain Although it has not been Leibowitz proved suggests we may have amphetaminelike fluctuations in our brains in response to romance and rejection He suggests that we humans all have pain and pleasure centers in our brains with different thresholds of activation They vary among individuals and within the same person at different times Love can be one of the most powerful activators of our pleasure centers If a love relationship is going well everything seems rosy If a relationship is uncertain anxiety may also be active resulting in emotional turmoil Could our cravings for romance realof our ly be seeking stimulation pleasure centers? Could those who fall in love repeatedly have pleasure centers wired to light up too readily? May they be addicted to the giddiness of the “attraction” phase and never move on to the calm “attachment” phase? Others studies have shown that couples who have stable happy relationships perceive that their love is "equal”: that is each is getting the same amount of love that he or she is giving Is it possible they are producing the same amounts of “love chemicals”? My Opinion JOHN WATERBURY Dear John Letters Courage Dear Readers: Let’s face it Sometimes life is rough At one time or another we all get to the end of our rope and we begin to question the meaning of our existence When you get th that point maybe the following will help DESIDERATA (That which is to be desired) Go placidly amid the noise and the haste and remember what peace there ipay be in silence As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons Speak your truths quietly and clearly and listen to others even to the dull and ignorant they too have their story Avoid loud and aggressive persons they are vexatious to the spirit If you compare yourself with others you may become bitter or vain for always there will be greater or lesser persons that yourself Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans Keep interested in your own career however humble it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time Exercise caution in your business affairs for the world is full of trickery But let this not blind you to what virtue there is many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism By yourself Especially do not feign affection Neither be cynical about love for on the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass Take kindly the counsel of the the years gracefully surrendering things of youth Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness Beyond a wholesome self discipline be gentle with yourself and whether or not it is clear to you no doubt the Universe is be unfolding as it should Therefore at peace with God and whatever your labors or aspirations in the noisy confusion of life keep peace in your soul With all its sham drudgery and broken dreams it is still a beautiful world Be cheerful Strive to be happy From the Poems of Max Ehrmann Dear John: It almost seems like I’m not the one living my life Everyone tells me what to do I don’t get to make any decisions at all Just recently I found this list that really rang my bell It’s from the book “When I Say No I Feel Guilty” I am a different person now I hope some of your readers will enjoy it Finally Free A BILL OF ASSERTIVE RIGHTS You have the right to judge your own behavior thoughts and emotions and to (ake the responsibility for their initiation and consequences upon yourself You have the right to offer no reasons or excuses for justifying your behavior You have the right to judge if you are responsible for finding solutions to other peoples problems You have the right to change your mind You have the right to make mistakes and be responsible for them You have the right to say “I don’t know” You have the right to be independent of the good will of others before coping with them You have the right to be illogical in making decisions You have the right to say “I don’t understand" You have the right to say “I don’t care” You have the right to say no without feeling guilty Dear FF: Your list as impressive as it is will not make you a new person It may however help develop some innate skills that were not developed previously Many people who are somewhat unassertive fail to understand the difference between assertiveness and agYou have rights but gressiveness remember so do others Good luck with your development by Dawn Carder My mother said “Be an individual” As children we were taught to have the courage of our convictions That meant that we were to speak our minds courteously and with respect for opposing view points to be and to defend our positions Having been so taught today I have difficulty understanding why adults sometimes behave in a cowardly manner There are five children in my family We have many differences of opinion which I consider normal and healthy As you might surmise discussions often become heated debates Yet we still respect and love each other My mother is in her seventies She continues to be an avid reader to attend peace rallies to stand by her political and religious convictions I do not always agree with her but I very much admire her courage and strength I also respect the example she continues to set for her children grandchildren friends and neighbors Regularly letters to the Editor arrive at the Chronicle Progress office Many are unsigned If an issue is important enough to trigger letter writing what about identifying is so frightening oneself? Where would our state our country our world be today if everyone behaved in such a cowardly way? Our forefathers were courageous Think of the Boston Tea dividuals Party of Sam Adams abolitionists Frederick Joseph Smith Douglas Brigham Young and countless others There was little doubt about their I shudder when convictions beliefs or I think what would have happened had not brave people all over the world opposed Hitler and Nazi Germany What could possibly happen to any one of us in Millard County who dares to give an opposing view or speak his mind? Ostracism? Look at the positive side Respect often results Sometimes a lone voice lends support to another less courageous person In any event it is my opinion that each of us has the to stand behind our responsibility beliefs Sign letters stand up and be counted Anything less is cowardice How can we expect another to do what we are afraid to do? Teacher to Parent Helping your child succeed Betty Condie Utah Education Association by President Has “being a good speller” becomme a dying art? Telephones have all but rendered letter writing obsolete What writing is still done is increasingly accomplished on personal computers equipped with handy “spellcheck” programs to ferret out and correct misspellings Still one measure of an educated person is knowing the difference between there their and they’re Spelling instruction has gone through some subtle variations in the last few years Games and exercises can make spelling instruction fun and effective Exercises range from a concentration on the word to continual repetition aloud An effective word search game is made by filling out sheets of paper with letters spelling words vertically horizontally and or backward Let your young spellers write their words on blackboard slates or “magic slates” Children who may be deficient in the visual memory that good spellers rely on can learn by arranging cutout cardboard letters or plastic letters to spell This boosts their memory words through sight and touch Emblazoning words letter by letter in the mind’s eye is an approach many teachers recommend for learning to spell Many elementary teachers notice that spelling improves significantly when students do their writing on microcomputers rather than in If you don’t have a comlonghand look for other ways to get puter around the predictable sameness of and drills lists spelling Focus on repetition because it’s clear that the more you bombard kids with the same using games to avoid monotony--thmore effective the memory process becomes ' The cost of living by Dennis Hinkamp Information Writer Utah State University “You know that new car you were looking at costs more than your mom and I paid for our house?” Yes Dad I know “You know your utility bill this month is more than our monthly mortgage payment?” Yes I know Dad and please don’t start telling me about nickel ice cream cones and 10 cent hamburgers Like bringing out your baby pictures the cost of things “back then” is a ploy used by parents to irritate their children Sure there are just as many $15000 cars now as there were $15000 houses back in 1963 but what about the salaries back then? The father in question mine was making only $5000 a year-average salary at the time The same house now is worth about $90000 and the median household come is up to about $30000 per year So the home in question is still worth about three times the annual income Of course there are many other variables such as mortgage utility and general maintenance costs of a home that make figuring the change of cost in home ownership difficult Even though my car buying days only go back 13 years the new models I looked at back then cost $2500 com- Consumer f tor r 'm pared to the same make and model costing $7500 now A three fold crease Again it is hard to say how the real cost of cars has changed over the years Gasoline is more expensive but most new cars get better mileage than the ’74 models There also are more safety and pollution control devices built into new cars that may save money in other areas of the economy Of course there are a few confounding facts that get in the way of complaining about inflation The first ball point pen cost $1250 and can now be had for 26 cents And nobody in his right mind would pay the $700 it cost for the first microwave ovens and VCRs of the not so distant past For most of us the “cost” of living really isn’t a statistic It is a combination of needs wants and status as compared to the standard of living of those around us We’ve all had this conversation about inflation at one time or another If you are old enough you probably have been on both sides It is a truism that things aren’t what they used to be The key question is what they used to be Instead of cursing inflation we should embrace it it gives us such great fuel to nag persons younger than we are |
