Show Jr Determination: Key to Success by Dawn Carder Robin Howell owner of Gifts Unlimited is not afraid of hard work Asked about the key to her success she replied "I was lucky opened at the right time” With a grin she added “Someone told me the other day that the harder you work the luckier you get" Robin has indeed worked hard Her “luck" appears to be the result of sheer effort and determination A native of Deseret Robin began her days as an entrepreneur in 1980 She was only years of age Not wanting to work for someone else she looked around for something that she could do that would take little or no overhead She began simply deciding that she could easily open a game furnished the room A supplier machines and took care of the maintenance therefore there was no real investment involved While running the game room Robin’s mind kept "buzzing along" coming up with new ideas and plannMovies and elecing new ventures tronics appeared to be a viable combination for success-othat could make money In order to become better informed on the subjects she read a lot and asked questions of those who were more knowledgeable Thus she became dropped the games and began renting movies and selling electronics Robin was determined to succeed in her OWN business! Being young and having no collateral were problems for Robin The only financial backing she initially received came from her father Phil Eliason “He thought I was crazy all along” Robin said did back her so one assumes that he did in fact have faith in his daughter the middle child in a of five family Until last month Gifts Unlimited was housed in a small building located at 38 North 100 West Video rentals were of course a hit and business Gifts such as water beds and grew electronics were added filling the small area to thfc extent that Robin decided a larger building was needed Making the decision to build a new place was easy to do Making it all happen was far more difficult Banks were scared of what was going to happen to the area economically with the close of IPP units Local bankers were supportive but those in Salt Lake set up road blocks Robin forged Undaunted ahead The new building located at 298 North Highway 6 was actually started before any loan was received Robin vested $50000 of her own money in it plus the land and the inventory It was indeed a scary venture Would she succeed? Ever supportive were Robin's husband father and loyal Tony customers The foundation was built by friends from Salt Lake That was November 1985 For nearly a year the foundation was all that existed That's how long it took Robin to receive the necessary financial backing to complete the The Small Business Adbuilding ministration which leans toward minorities and women was the needed component to make the dream become a reality Without it Robin would not have been able to get a loan §BA provided half of the money quired and then Valley bank supplied the other half Right before Thanksgiving this year the building was ready all of the inventory was moved in and the new Gifts Unlimited was opened for business It is an impressive square fcct- - Livestock Show Carcass Contest Rules for the the past four years have helped more than 15000 people pay wintertime electric bills according to Dave Florence administrator of the program for the Red Cross Florence said the program has proved successful because 83 percent of those helped have needed the assistance only one time and are able to stay on electric service and other bills The Utah Legislature previously set up funding in which the state would match $1 for every $2 donated to Lend a Hand fund but that source is now questionable because of state budgetary to James C problems according Taylor president of UP&L “By far the largest contributors to the Lend a Hand fund are UP&L’s customers who have contributed about 84 percent of the money available for emergency assistance They make contributions to the fund by using the contribution option available f Mr Taylor with each electric said During the program’s four years of UP&L customers the needy aiding have contributed $733000 he added funds have come from “Other who have set up UP&L employees contribution their own voluntary system and have donated about 4 percent of the total over the past four years F unds collected by employees are sent to the Red Cross each week “A third source of funding is UP&L’s shareholders who have provided about percent of the assistance UP&L provided money Additionally about II percent of the assistance UP&L has conmoney Additinally tributed about $90000 to cover costs of administering the program over and above the direct contributions” Mr Taylor added Customers can contribute by checking a box on their electric bill and adding the amount desired to the monthly payment Some add $1 to the payment many add $10 and others contribute substantially more mail donations Other contributors directly to the Red Cross registered last year This was reported by Utah Foundation the private research organization in its latest analysis of school enrollment trends in Utah to the report public According school enrollments for the entire state rose from 403305 in 1985 to 415994 in 1986 a gain of 12689 pupils during the year This increase however is about 64 percent below what was pected when the school program for was being formulated earlier in the year Although Utah school enrollments will continue to climb the increases will be much less than what they have been in the immediate past In fact the Foundation projections show that if present trends continue there will be little or no growth in Utah enrollments by the middle of the 1990 decade Ips Celebrate There are about three million keys raised on farms
