Bewildered Dear Bewildered From a purely logical point of view it is really difficult to understand why anybody would destroy themselves by drinking large amounts of alcohol or abusing a variety of other drugs It just doesn’t seem to make any sense and in an attempt to explain the seemingly unexplainable it becomes easy to write the whole problem off as a sign of weakness or at least a personality In reality there are many rational explanations why this apparently illogical problems develops To begin with chemically dependent individuals (that includes both alcoholics and drug addicts) are first and foremost afflicted with human nature- And as such that means they usually do what they feel is in their best interest That’s one of the maladies of human nature from which we all suffer and is not relegated just to chemically dependent individuals We all try to make sense out of our perception of reality The problem comes to being when that perception becomes impaired and the resulting judgments and decisions become skewed and proThis degenerative process blematic becomes impaired and the resulting judgments and decisions become skewThis degenerative ed and problematic process is bad enough by itself but unfortunately it perpetuates an escalating self defeating process which negativeon all areas of the ly impacts dividuals life In other words the chemically dependent individual gets continually sicker without fully realizing that he is sick All around him things are falling apart or at least showing signs of imminent demise But with the resulting impairment of perception the individual blames everyone but himself Now there are many reasons why people become addicted Researchers are finding increasing evidence that the in cause is physiological primary nature but right now want to focus on some other variables which are the not the cause result of the problem They will help to explain why the problem gets out of control We all like to feel that we are in con- - Records You need a copy of a vital record you say and you don’t know where to apply for it Well don’t feel alone A lot of us are in the same boat We live in an era of bureaucratic is documentation and From time to time simply a we need copies of records of birth death ceremonies and marriage disorce decrees We need them for a variety of reasons: applying for veterans’ benefits of Social Security payments Or maybe we want nothing more than a passport to travel Alas theie is no uniform method of among the states What Utah may file in county records mas keep within municipalities from Comes now a virtual the Center for Consumer Education based in South Orange NJ The center has recently published the “Guide to Locating Vital Documents” which contains a listing of addresses and telephone numbers of where specific records can be located the cost of a copy of the document and sample form letter s containing all the information needed to get the material Copies of the book may be obtained b mailing $4 to Consumer Education Research Center Documents 439 Claik St South Orange NJ 07079 A separate publication the “Consumer Guide to Social Security is also asailable Benefits front the same address for $6 offices to close All Millard County Offices will be on Friday the 26th of closed December 1986 and Friday the 2nd of January 1987 By order of the this Millard County Commissioners 1986 25th day of November I "A man cannot know everything but everyone haa to have somethoroughly'' Gustav Freytag thing he know thest away from the car and it is always smaller on the hill than it is in the house" The children did find the perfect Christmas tree all agreed The father sawed it at the base and the father and mother carried the tree to the car while the children made trails in and out of the cedars They found some cedar mistletoe growing in the branches of a gnarled old cedar The father reached with his saw and cut enough to carry home The children sat in the snow and the mother poured warm cocoa into tin The few falling snowflakes cups melted and glistened on their cheeks Water dripped from the five pairs of overshoes snow melted on woolen caps and coats but happiness and content filled the little car and they were soon home to the warmth of the wood fire in the stove The father built a wooden stand on the little cedar and the home was filled with the fragrance of Christmas Popcorn strings paper chains the tinsel rope used year after year the red paper bells the star on top made the cedar a beautiful sight The father hung some of the mistletoe over a door frame The mother stood under it and it worked! The children all laughed It was truly Christmas in the little farmhouse In those early days of our valley and the little family lived happily ever after Mary Henrie Once upon a time before the days of Christmas tree lots and twinkling lights a little family living in the valley was getting ready for Christmas There was corn popping honey canand making gifts dy and gingerbread to give There was practicing music and stories for Christmas programs The little family knew that somewhere in the hills was the perfect little cedar Christmas tree to make their happiness complete One day the father said to the mother and the children '‘Today is the day we must go for a Christmas tree there is a storm coming the clouds are gathering in the north The little family was warmly dressed with coals and mittens and overshoes and caps The old Chev coupe didn't have a heater but crowded together they were warm The car traveled well on a road traveled by a wagon load of wood right up in the east hills to the edge of the cedars There a deep cover of new snow was untrampled except for the trails of rabbits and small creatures The family would walk through the snow to find the perfect tree The sagebrush and undergrowth between the cedars was covered and the cedar trees were decorated with glistening white Blue jays darted between the trees reprimanding the trespassers who paid no attention but ran through the snow their breath making little puffs of frost The father laughed and said “The best Christmas tree is always found far- - NEW PHONE NUMBERS Fillmore City Fillmore City Library ’ Alcoholics j Anonymous Meetings: Mon & Wed pm at Delta City Bldg Chamber of Commerce office 8 51 North Center ALANON: For info call TEENAGE PROBLEMS? about people But maybe not Read on Any school child in America can immediately recognize the Florida Keys In the lower righthand corner of a map of the United States is something that from a carresembles splotches tographer's leaky pen Those are "The Keys" As youngsters we learned to identify them as an archipelago They stretch miles out into the Gulf of Mexico At their southern extremity from miles 90 Castro’s they’re only Communist Cuba And until Hawaii joined the union they were as far south as you could go in the United States There’s a mess of little islands and reefs down there Some of them without names Everybody knows two of them though Bogart and Bacall troduced us to “Key Largo” and Hemingway and the US Navy combined to make us aware of Key West had always liked Key West in the past It was sort of a “brassy” little place There was always something to do Something going on And yet on the other hand you could always find at least a short stretch of beach if you preferred to spend a few hours doing absolutely nothing I went down in the early fall of '83 intent on doing absolutely nothing at least for a week or two It’s a boring drive' really once you’ve made it from Homestead to the end of the line To actually enjoy it a second time you have to honestly love sea vistas glaring concrete and palmetto trees r filled my mind during the drive with thoughts of getting a endless days of good tan and about a half dozen I was going to indulge in at my favorite Italian restaurant (No I’m not going to tell you its name) October is the best month to visit The Keys The summer vacationers are gone and the winter crowd hasn’t arrived yet You can get a KOA slot for your van for about $5 a night And all of them in sight of the sea and the sound of the surf The place didn’t look all that different when I pulled in about dusk got gas then drove to a KOA and checked in Then I did my laundry and turned in received the rude awakening the next morning as to what had happened to the town First of all there was a paucity of women about Ail I saw were guys And they were holding hands and hugging and kissing Don’t get me wrong I don’t argue a man's politics religion or lifestyle I’m not out to save the world from anything I’m just out to report whatever small part of it time allows But have to admit that was momentarily taken back by what was seeing I had always associated Key West and sailors gutsy submariners and the best of the navy’s “Top Guns” And of course "Papa" Hemingway himself The part of the title page of books with the date place had It at the end of the volume The word comes from but had never met Hemingway a brief note from him in 1953 after I wrote and told him how much enjoyed “The Old Man and the Sea" If was allowed a hero in those envied his gusto his days he was it African safaris his experiences in war his accounts of the Lincoln Brigade his civil conflict during Spain's panache for living and his terse style of writing liked his old house at 907 Whitehead St It’s open for public tours now ($250 for adults $1 for He wrote there for nine children) years The house and the island provided him with all of his needs a solitude and a serenity for creating the Gulf Stream for fishing for marlin and Joe’s" saloon amberjack "Sloppy over on Green Street for evenings of and reasonably drinking happy days with his second wife who was a Pauline Pfeiffer staffer for Vogue when she lured him away from Hadley in 1928 You can “sense" Hemingway in that house All things point to him: the kitchen elevated that appliances frame measured up to his the massive bed with a headboard carved from the wooden gate of a Spanish a ceramic cat made and monastery presented to him by Pablo Picasso many photos of him in chest exposed in all of them And one photograph he disliked A hokey portrait used to promote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” It shows him at a typewriter He seldom used one preferring a pencil and yellow lined legal notepads “Sloppy Joe’s" is still there but wouldn’t frequent the Hemingway place today They get a lot of calls there for “Pink Squirrels” and “Bombay Zombies” and “Tequila Sunrises" and "Bahama Mamas" The kind of stuff a Princeton freshmen thinks gives him an air of sophistication I didn't stay as long as originally tended stayed three days Long enough to put some color in my cheeks straighten up the van and have one glorious Italian dinner started off with brodo di manzo thick with beef and onions and that followed with rigatoni con salsiccia (just a small plate) Now the sgombro ripieno covered with fat mushrooms fresh mint and grated Romano' The house threw in a little bowl of arrostiti With it all had the house wine a chianti For dessert I accepted the recommendation of farfallette dolci and zabaglione finished with delicate cups of caffe espresso lightly laced with brandy and the lone concession to my native North Carolina cigaret (Everything $650 I’m keeping this place to myself) slept well that night and dreamt of hunting lions on the Africa veldt By the time the sun was rising in the east like some orange aflame was back to the mainland don’t think I’ll every go back there Well maybe for Italian called the "colophon" Early books printer and edition the German kolophon meaning the top or summit Tis the season: remember the homeless by Dawn Carder The Christmas season has always been my favorite time of the year I love the decorations the beautiful music the expectation in the faces of children the excitement in the air the glow of Christmas trees the hustle and bustle of shoppers Most of all I love the spirit that prompts all of us to be a little kinder a little more loving a tle more concerned about our fellow as well as Chrismen tian It seems that Christmas 'tis the season that brings out the best in prompts us to forget self for a brief at helps us seek peace and happiness Would that we could keep this spirit for a full year! Last weekend for the first time I exthe wonder of Temple perienced illuminated at night and Square brilliant with the thousands of Christmas lights and decorations A soft rain was falling but spirits were not The Mormon Tabernacle dampened Choir was in concert the music was piped outdoors and like a child I was filled with wonderment and awe Why thought could I not share my feelings and this beauty with everyone especially those less fortunate than I? the beautifully Walking around decorated malls filled with the many stores and hundreds of well dressed it was difficult for me to shoppers believe that there is a suffering economy that people are homeless and hungry Yet I know these things are true As much as I enjoyed the beauty I was made and magnificence keenly aware of the economic disparity in our state and in our country Do the who afford cannot to parents buy gifts care less for their children than those who are affluent? I don’t believe so 'Tis the season for us to remember the homeless and hungry to collect food and toys for needy families to call on the elderly and the ill AH of this is commendable but where are we the other eleven months of the year? The needy are not needy just at Christmas The homeless are just as cold in January The man or woman without ill work is just as discouraged in May or June Are we doing anything to improve their lot in life? Despite our good intentions beneficence can be demeaning and humiliating When my husband was a student at Yale Divinity School he was also serving as the assistant minister for a large church in Connecticut I remember how embarrassed I felt when a basket of food was delivered to us at Christmas by a church committee At the time I did not realize the practice was a common one I thought we were given the food because the church members considered us to be poor which we were and felt somewhat resentful After all I did have my pride I’ve often wondered how many other people have felt this same embarrassment ’Tis the season that jogs my complacency I love my country yet I am aware of its problems I cannot do everything but maybe I can do a little more My brother cannot lift himself his boot if he has no boots up by straps |
