Show Millard County Kanosh Kapers TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH by Robert Day MD Cub Scout News Fillmore Delta By Edith Dearden ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AN APPROACHING EPIDEMIC The annual Cub Scout will be held sessions training 17 1984 at the Nov Saturday Fillmore Stake Center Registration begins at 8:30 am and classes at 9 am All Cub Scout leaders and Bishop counselors over Scouting are Valuable to attend encouraged materials information on the will be presented and methods for be will There something Dementia in mild forms affects percent of persons over the age of 65 Four to five percent of persons over 65 will develop a severe form of dementia One half of all cases of dementia are due to Alzheimer’s Disease a disorder of unknown cause first described in 1906 by Alois Alzheimer a German physician The proportion of the population most likely to be affected by this disease those over 65 has grown tremendously (1950: 8 percent or 11 million 1978: 123 percent or 22 million by 2030: 17 to 20 percent or 51 million) creating the potential for a problem of epidemic proportions Even now the cost of this disease is enormous as over half of nursing home beds are filled with unfortunate The National persons with senile dementias Institute of Aging estimates that the core or chronic dementia patients currently costs 12 billion dollars annually This burden will only rise as more and more Americans live to elderly ages unless some prevention or cure can be found for Alzheimer’s Disease What Is Alzheimers? The terminology has been confusing in the past but most professionals in this area now use this word to describe a type of dementia characterized by gradual onset and progressive mental disfunction in patients of any age (most are years of age) where other causes of dementia have been excluded (see below) Affected patients exhibit a of mental functioning over months to years Initial gradual deterioration excessive forgetfulness irrational symptoms may be seen as confusion behaviors or poor memory What can be done about It? There is currently no specific method of treatment or cure Patients can usually be managed however prevention Some patients by family support and maintenance of a constant environment will require sedative medications some will require nursing home care Has any progress been made toward a treatment? Yes Based on research in recent years it now appears that a specific area of the brain is affected resulting in loss of nerve connections between certain brain areas (This is similar to the cause of Parkinson’s Disease a related brain disorder which is now treatable) These findings are the first step toward finding a treatment Ginical trials have been undertaken to test certain drugs but as yet there have been no positive results In summary Alzheimer’s Disease is an increasing problem in our country Some progress has been made in identifying its cause but much research still needs to be done Approximate frequency of causes of dementia 6 percent Brain tumors trauma Alzheimer’s Disease - 50 percent Nutrition drugs alcohol Huntington’s Giorea 5 percent percent All other causes -- 21 percent Disease (stroke) - 8 percent Cerebrovasculor everyone This is a good opportunity to get up to date information and to exchange ideas with other leaders more information Those needing 13 contact JoAnn Utley and JoAnn Utley Karen Bennett Joy Ford attended the Utah National Parks Council’s “Train The Trainer” on Oct 27 at Orem JoAnn Utley and attended the Arlene Bartholomew Leaders Cub Council’s special training conference on Nov 10 in Orem New leaders for the Fillmore First Ward Cubs are: Anthony Aguiar -Den leader trainer Sharon Aguiar Den leader Susan Kesler and and Sarah Nez -
