Show Millard Count) Ia)e USPS Thurs Sept 13 1984 Hinckley by Golda T Christensen A lady one who had just moved in said “We have to go to Delta for everything” “We didn’t always have to go to Delta we had everything we needed here We had an elementary school a high school tw o stores a butcher shop a barber shop a drug store the Doctor ho came to our homes to bring the babies a picture show house a a hat a a garage shop blacksmith shop and a cream station There was not a beauty shop everyone fixed their own hair then” The old cream station is still standing south of the Morris store Oasis and Deseret folks sent their cream in five and ten gallon cans with the mail It was tested for butter fat and then sent to Salt Lake to be made into butter We were paid for the amount of butter in the cream At one time there was a creamery that took the milk and made it into cheese Church was held in the school house The bell would ring one half hour before the time for Sunday School to start to give us warning that there was only a half an hour to get there The Millard Academy was a church school LDS the first high school in the In 1924 the Academy was County turned over to the County Students from all over the country came to go the Millard Academy Several of the teachers were from Arizona President Spencer Kimball’s wife Camilla was one of the many good teachers When the school put on an opera we dressed in our best and everyone went In the latter part of the 1920’s the basketball team from the Hinckley High school with just a few boys on the team won the State Basketball tournament There was a big celebration We had a good telephone system There were twelve parties on the same line We would hear six of the rings but the other six we would not hear The rings were one long and two shorts two longs and one short four longs two shorts and two longs etc We had a hotel a three story house on main street still standing and in good shape Hinckley has always been and still is a good place to live!
