After Hillcrest knocked off Monday West Granger Jordan 144 Wednesday, and 2 Thursday, and Highland Alta stopped Cyprus Monday, the two teams took off for the four day U of U Firecracker tourney that will be concluded on Monday of this week. In the first two days, Hillcrest won 1 over Granite then lost to Taylorsville and Alta to Taylorsville Alta first lost then beat Hillcrest and lost to Grand Junction, Colorado For the area's other four teams, Bingham picked up three more wins, beating Judge 6- - 1 Monday, Holladay Wednesday, and Highland Friday; West Jordan followed a 7- - 5 loss to Cottonwood Monday and its Wednesday loss to Hillcrest with a 0 win over Jordan Friday; Brighton lost all to West three of its games, to Kearns 154 Monday, 4 and Friday; Wednesday, and Jordan also went 17-- 4 17-- 9--3 v 4 11-- 6--3. 12-- 6 9--1 10-- " 4 ... 2. 5-- 3 7-- 2 7-- 8--1 . , ... , v , . Hillcrest totally dominated the contest, going on to win 14-4. Local golfer second in long drive tournament Gary Schneiter, representing Schneiter's Golf and Recreation Center in Sandy, placed second in Drive Long Regional tournament held play Wednesday at Nibley Park. Schneiter led the tourney until the final round with a drive of 316 yards and four inches. He was one of eight Utah golfers to qualify for the tournament, in which participants from nine states took part. This is the fourth year Schneiter has made it to the regionals,, finishing second twice, third once, and placing once. In Jr. Open action hosted by Schneiters in June, Stewart Weston won the 7 year old division with a two round total of 76 followed by Liz Schneiter at 81 and Bill Barraston at 82. Rob Stanger shot the best score of the tournament, a 65, in the 5 division, where Brad Shelton was second at 68 and Jason Bullock third at 69. In the 3 and the 11 and under divisions, golfers played just nine holes. Matt Ahrend won the 3 title with a 40 followed by Scott Brockbank at 41 and Mike Schneiter at 42. Two junior skiers from Utah will be honored this summer for their achievements in the 1982-8Junior Challenge Pepsi NASTAR ski racing program. The Utah skiers ended the winter ranked in the top 25 in the nation in their respective age categories. Approximately junior entrants were recorded in Junior NASTAR program, which was conducted at 120 ski areas across the country this past winter. A total of 300 skiers will be honored in the program, which includes six age categories for boys and girls who are 18 years old and younger. The Utah skiers ranked in the top 25 are Tyler Hansen of Midvale in the 6 age group and Mandy Striet of Park City. Bob NASTAR Beattie,- Commissioner and former U.S. SKi Team and Olympic coach, said, "These Utah skiers can take a great deal of pride in being ranked in the top 25 of the program, particularly since some 100,000 entrants were recorded this past winter. "Part of the reason for NASTAR's existence," Beattie said, "is to encourage young skiers to compete in the sport and discover the excitement of ski racing.
