Over ninety scaled down versions of those bygone beasts, all done in paper mache, were prominently displayed in the second grade learning center, set in natural their surroundings. The models were crafted by the students as part of their study of natural history. Though the medium was newsprint and flour paste and the sculptors were second graders, one had little trouble recognizing these fearsome former residents. The only trouble came in trying to names. their pronounce Fortunately, knowledgeable students were on hand to guide one through this trip into the past. Represented in the pre- were historic menagerie Brontosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus, Tricerotops, Ankyosaurus, Allosaurus, Pterodactyl, Pterandon, Stegosaurus, Dimetrodon, and, of course, the worst of the bunch, Tyrannosaurus Rex. Welby second grade teachers Barbara Steers, Cathy Anderson, and Jackie Owens decided to do the diarama project because they felt it would help make students more aware of the place dinosaurs have in our history. The students learned, for instance, that our present day deposits of coal, oil, and natural gas were created from the remains of plants and animals, hence the term "fossil fuels." pre-histor- ic But, the project gave the students a chance to add their own personal touch to the course of study. Teachers began by allowing students to pick what kind of dinosaur they wanted to sculpt, but had to abandon that idea when 27 out of 31 students in one class all settled on Tyrannonsaurus Rex. Though teachers and some parents were on hand to assist, each student was in charge of his or her project. They began assembling a collection of rolled paper tubes into arms, legs, and torso then followed by adding layer upon layer of paste saturated paper and a coat of paint then topping things off with a couple of rows of jagged white done.'" Owen noted that there were all kinds of other positive spin offs to the project. Throughout the course of study, students had to draw upon their skills in phonetics, reading, music, and even math. It also proved to be a pretty good motivational tool. "We had a boy that we just couldn't get to read," she continued. "He just didn't find it interesting. Now he reads all the teeth. Clearly, students doing s had the most fun with teeth, but as one teacher stated thankfully, "At least they didn't paint any blood on them." The dinosaurs took two weeks to complete, but the students didn't stop there. They created a landscape on which to display their masterpieces. They then recorded their own version of a song about dinosaurs, which they used as a meat-eater- pre-histor- ic musical backdrop time." I guess we don't have to ask what about. the for display. Students from the other classes were given a chance to view the exhibit and air participating students gave their parents a guided tour. "I think studying dinosaurs this way will help a student internalize what they've learned, make it a part of each child," Easy on Your BUDGET! Steers commented. teacher "Doing something like this at this age can lead to memories that will last the rest of their lives."
