While Crescent elementary is complete and ready to open Thursday, students at Quail Hollow elementary and West Jordan High will be greeted by both teachers and workmen. Due to the overcrowding at other schools, district officials voted to open the two facilities before they were complete and partition off unfinished areas. Both buildings are scheduled to be finished within the first semester. Lake last week approved an increase in the mill levy to help support the. capital outlay budget. Due to changes in the assessed valuation of the district, the mill levy for the capital budget was increased from 16.67 to 17.35 mills. During the same meeting the board learned that due to increases in the health and accident insurance premiums paid for employes, the district will have to increase the premiums from .77 to 1.49 percent This amount added to the packages of increases offered to classified employes and brought the total to 9.12, for certified employes, it was raised to 9.64. West Jordan High School, 8136 S. 2700 W., will provide class space for 2400 more high school students, while Crescent Elementary, 11000 S. 230 E., and Quail Hollow Elementary, 2625 E. New Castle Dr., will be able to house 810 students each. Hie new high school, designed by Montmorency, Hayes, and Talbot Architects, will not be completed when school opens. However, the teaching areas, offices, restrooms, etc. will be finished and ready for students. The football field and outdoor stadium are also finished, but students will have to wait several weeks to use the field house. Construction will continue while school is in session, with workmen and students each in their areas. The building is not behind schedule. In fact, the contract with Hogan and Tingey Construction does not call for the building to be finished until Jan. 1. However, because of a pressing need to relieve crowding at Bingham High, the decision was made to open the school early. Also, it seemed better to have, the West Jordan students moderately inconvenienced with some, unfinished facilities rather than disrupted by changing schools halfway through the year. The 334,000 sq. ft. building will cost about $15.8 million. . Crescent Elementary is completely finished, but some work still remains on the cafeteria and e room at Quail Hollow. Another four or five weeks multi-purpos- will be needed before those areas will be ready for use. Both were elementaries designed by McDermott and Associates. Parents submitted ideas for the plan, which features a combination of self-contain- classrooms and open space areas. Thorup Brothers Construction built Cresdent Elementary; Hogan and Tingey is building Quail Hollow. Each school cost in the neighborhood of $2.4 million. Fire Department's growth was the topic of discussion Tuesday evening at the Sandy City Council meeting. Firefighters, under the direction of Chief Bill Hough, presented long range plans for the department, showing several alternatives for the council to consider. The department is now manned by 21 paid employes and 55 volunteers. Headquarters is at the 1220 E. 9400 S. station. There is a station at 11300 S. 2000 E., and the old station at 50 E. Center in old Sandy is still in operation. The department based its presentation on the importance of ? Sandy the stations. As the city continues to grow, it is an increasing concern of the department that response to a fire can only take more minutes of valuable time if stations are not placed in areas where they are needed. The city can be covered by adding two more stations which could give four minute response time. Ideally, aiming for the three minute response time, spokesmen said that the city could eventually add six more stations places in strategic areas such as 9400 S. 1300 E., 9000 S. State, 11400 S. 2000 E , 10300 S. 3000 E., 10600 S. 1000 E , 8200 S. 700 E., 8700 S. 1000 E., 10200 S. State, and 10000 S. 2300 E. The council will continue its study of the needs of the fire department before making its decision on the placement of stations. Midvale slates water rate increase hearing The Midvale city council has scheduled a public hearing for Sept. 1 to discuss a proposed hike in water fees. The meeting will take place from 7 to 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the city hall. The suggested new regular rates would be $4.50 for the first 10,000 gallons and between 34 and 36 cents for each additional 1,000 gallons, while the senior citizen rate would climb to $4.50 for the first 25,000 gallons and 34 to 36 cents for each addition 1,000. The current rates, approved last Feb. 1, are $3 for the 10,000 gallons and 3 cents for each 1,000 after that with seniors paying the same amount for the first 25,000 and each extra 1,000. The Midvale fire department has taken possession of a new pumper unit and the Ambulance Association a new ambulance. Both vehicles are in transit to Midvale from factories back east and should arrive later this week. The new fire truck cost the city $121 .ui l.
