Returns From two-wee- k son-in-la- Manti Adults Invited Outing The Birch Log UNICEF Still Aiding Reds by John F. McManus What about UNICEF? Does it provide food and medicine for Belmont, Massachusetts needy children? Or is it in business, instead, to assist Communists in their steady drive toward total world domination? Aid To North Vietnam Columnist Robert D. Heinl recently offered additional evidence to support the contention of a growing number of Americans that the real business ol UNICEF is bankrolling Red takeovers. Writing in the Greenville (S.C.) News for May 16, 1975, Colonel Heinl pointed out that, as part of an emergency program, the U.N. children's agency supplied goods worth $8,975,587 to the Communists in Vietnam during their drive to ultimate victory. UNICEF also supplied goods valued at $5,360,707 to the government in Saigon. But a close look at some of the details of these grants will infuriate anyone with a sense of justice. what goods are supplied to the Red regime. When pressed about the matter of monitoring the use of the equipment given to North Vietnam, a UNICEF spokesman admitted to Colonel Heinl: UNICEF has no way to make sure the supplies to the Communists got to children. They were dropped off at the airports and docks, and we assume they were used as we intended." Such trust is either incredible naivete, or knowing treachery. A History Of Aiding The Reds UNICEFs Claims UNICEF has been financing Red takeovers ever since it was created. In 1957, Father Gerald McKernan testified before a U.S. Senate subcommittee. He told of being an eyewitness in 1949 to the deliberate diversion of UNICEF supplies to a Communist group in Shanghai 7 during the Red advance in China. In 1962, Msgr. Edward Goebel, school superintendent for the Catholic archdiocese of Milwaukee, refused permission to UNICEF to conduct its Halloween Trick or Treat program in the Catholic schools. He based his decision on the protests of several former Army chaplains who had seen UNICEF proceeds end up in Communist hands. Perhaps the worst example of the use of UNICEF funds in behalf of Communism was the diversion of $10 million to finance the United Nations war against Katanga in 1961. Neither U.N. nor UNICEF apologists like to be reminded that the U.N. forces bombed hospitals, shot civilians, and committed terrible atrocities in that immoral campaign. UNICEF likes to boast that all its gifts go to needy children and that it carefully monitors the distribution and use of whatever it supplies. But such a claim is hardly supportable in view of the fact that UNICEFs grants are given to governments. Even when deliveries of goods are made to governments, the exis usually overmisuse ol and tent corruption whelming. But to supply a Communist government. where tyranny is already entrenched, is to no matter solidify the position of the tyrants No Surprise To Us We are not surprised to read that any U.N. agency is in the business of financing the Reds. What surprises us is that so many Americans UNICEF with funds through Trick or Treat and greeting card programs are still deceived by this patently fraudulent outfit. UNICSJF is playing a trick on its supporters. The "freat" is for the Communists. Cups rinht I97i b The John Hmh Snciets Features What Did UNICEF Supply? The South Vietnamese government was given food and medicine by UNICEF. But the North Vietnamese government was provided with trucks, bulldozers, tools, and heavy conall, according to struction equipment UNICEF, to be used in rebuilding schools. The lact that these items are essential for warmaking seems to have been overlooked. Arsonists needing gasoline might also try UNICEF. It appears that.few questions are asked.
