This is the dead tw ig sy mptom that is show ing up on some apple and pear trees now. The disease is caused by a baeteria. As you inspeet the alfeeted twig or shoot you will see that the twig has turned a daik brown to black color, citherentiicly or in spots. If you scratch the discolored area you will find that there is no file, i.e., there is no green under the baik and it is drying. The discolored area is only a visual sy mptom ol w hat the pathogen docs to infected tissue. The bacteria are also furthei down stem liv ing in apparently healthy tissue, where the lesion will eventually extend. To ptevenl lurther damage to the tree, inleeted shoots should he pruned 2 inches below the infected area. I ft ho affected shoot is only a few inches King you should continue on the next larger branch it attaches to. You may even notice that the inleetion and thus the symptom has spiead into the next btaneli. You may notice on the affected tw ig a slimy substance or if the infection is Many lawns will hav e most roots in the to depth. This means such lawns may need watering every third day. You cancxperiment to see how the lawn will respond if you don't water the morning of the third 6- - day. If you start seeing big greenish, blueish. gray ish areas y ou need to water the lawn. If there isonly asmall stressed spot or two w ater them separately and do the w hole lawn the next day. Even automatic sprinkler systems can be overridden or even reset without a lot of trouble. We should not be slaves to our equipment but rather we need to make it work for us. An average loamy soil will hold about a quarter inch more w ater than a sandy soil and a clay soil will hold about a quarter inch more than a loamy soil in 12 inches. Another way to check for soil moisture is to try to stick a long bladed screw driver in the soil. If it won't penetrate the law n needs w alering. If it goes in for 10 inches w ith relative ease (depending on rocks etc.) the soil is moist enough for at least one or more days. Elow er beds and gardens that are not w atered w ith the law n likely don't need to be w atered as often. Though most of the roots are in the top 2 inches of soil they olten use a little less water and the roots can take w ater from more soil. very recent it may even he sticky. This is the bacterial ooe made by the hac-te- i These soils are best checked w ith a ta and itsell contains baeteria. Somesmall garden trowel. Dtgdow n several times this material with its accompany mg h.xtci 1. is xpuad from one twig to inches and take some soil in your hand anothet by tain and wind or by xpim-klerand feel the moisture. Such xpicading ol the pathogen Wixxly plants require water even xan result m new infections You should less often. Kor many, a grxxl watering cheek your trees for blight every 3 once every two or three weeks is addays to see il new infections have equate. As you have probably already developed and take them out stxm so as possible to reduce the amount of thought as you have read this; il is a -- x 2-- damage that is done. It truly is summer IRRIGATION now and the warm, diy weather certainly feels like it. We need to he sure to provide water to the various plants in our yards in the amounts and frequencies required by the plants and as alfeeted by thesoil'sahility to hold the w ater. A soil high m clay will hold more water than a sandy soil. The clay soil may hold almost a half inch more readily available water in a loot than a very sandy soil. In moderately w ami weather w ith little w md. that would keep grass lor almost two days. On u hot windy day the glass will use one third of an inch of water so the grass may be showing some signs of stiess before the 2nd day is over A sandy soil holds a hide less than one inch ol readily available water in the top loot. A well rooted grass plant has roots dial may reach 10 inches into the soil. A lew roots may go deeper. gixxl idea to put plants with similar water requirements together." Many plants that can get along w itliout being water every few days will do better if they are not watered too frequently. In fact some such plants are injured by too frequent watering. Many vegetable garden plants do much better when the soil moisture is kepi relatively constant. That is, dont let the soil gel very dry nor should it be kept wet for very long. In al eases of y ard irrigation, get the water on and leave it long enough to water the soil to the depth necessary and then get it off. This reduces the length of time the plant roots arc in a saturated soil. Roots do not function very well in soil that has only water and mineral matter. They need oxygen to live.
