But the prestigious Rockefeller Commission, in its report about the CIA, has confirmed that such concern is indeed That a Commission headed by Vice President Nelson Rockefeller should dwell on the fact of Communist espionage and subversion within our borders is quite a surprise. It is no surprise, however, to note how little attention the news media have paid to the Rockefeller Commis- sions warnings. What Did The Commission Say? First of all, the Commission said that the United States remains the principal intelligence target of the Communist bloc. Further, it said that the Communists invest large sums of money, personnel, and sophisticated technology within the United. in collecting information on our military capabilities, our States weapons systems, our defense structure, and our social divisions. The Communists seek to penetrate our intelligence services, to compromise our law enforcement agencies, and to recruit as their agents United States citizens holding sensitive government and industry jobs. Thousands Of Red Spies The Commission then noted that the number of Communist spies actively working all over the world has been estimated at more than half a million, and that the number of Communist government officials stationed in the United States has tripled since 1960. In addition to Communist agents who are in the United States legally, the Commission pointed out that many other Red agents are in our country illegally; that is, they are using false identities. Finally, the Commission said that the Reds can monitor and record private This raises the telephone conversations real spectre that selected American users of telephones are potentially subject to blackin some cases to recruitor even mail ment as espionage agents. .... ... ... tensen and children spent the past weekend as guests of her mother, Mrs. Lenore Denison. In other words, as the Communist subversion of America has mushroomed, our government has been systematically destroying the mechanisms that were created to protect us.
