Show Page B4 Thursday, June 13, 1996 Messenger-Enterpris- e Positive Action student of the Year fl I Centennial Wagon Train coming on June 17 4 As the Centennial Wagon Train comes through Ephraim on June 17, with its estimated 80 ft wagons and 500 people, everyone is invited to come to the highway east of the Park cemetery at approximately 1 1:45 a.m. and greet and mingle with the group and welcome them to Ephraim. This wagon train, in its 446-mil- e journey from Logan to Cedar City, exemplifies this year of Utahs statehood the many wagon trains that came west prior to 896. It is a reminder to us of that part of our state's history when the U3 1 t - pioneer travelers were greeted with sagebrush lands and a sea of salt. There music, song and dance often beguiled the exiles into forgetfulness By Greg Dettingcr Manti High School student Daniel Smalley represented Manti High School in the Stock Market Game and turned a $100,000.00 investment of imaginary dollars into a half a million dollar return in just ten weeks. Daniel Smalley, a junior at Manti High School represented the T emplars tw ice this ) ear in the Stock Market Game, which is a competition held by the state between all of the schools w ith business programs. There are both team and individual competition. The students are given a fixed amount of imaginary money and they set up a stock portfolio based on the actual market which tw I our country, and perhaps not in the history of the world, quite parallels this journey ... except the sub- sequent march of the same people from the Missouri River to the shores of the Great Salt Lake. There were in this group 15.000 saints, 3000 wagons, 30.000 head of cattle, a great number of mules and horses and immense flocks of sheep. By 1850 over 1,000 people were settled in and around 1 the Mormon metropolis of Salt Lake City, It was one of the epic mass migrations of American history. Daniel and his business coach, Craig McAffee, were invited to the awards banquet held at the Double Tree Hotel in Salt Lake City on Friday May 17 where the school was presented with a trophy for Daniel's efforts.
