Show Luther Hall Hears Of f Sons Son's Death DeathA A Christmas card and a letter from Nevada Mo Mop brought to Luther F. F Hall additional information about the death of his son Eldon E. E Hall which occurred Nov 15 1944 but of which Mr Hall did not learn for several months I The Christmas card came from Wm C C. C Breeding 1104 E. E Locust St. St N Nevada Nevada Ne Ne- evada e- e vada Missouri and on it was written I III was one of Eldon's many friends I was on the ship when it was hit and saw Eldon right after he was hit I fact I helped c carry rry him to the first aid room I know you had to bear the greatest loss but you didn't bear it alone I visited Eldon's grave before be before before be- be fore I left the Philippines Its It's a pretty cemetery Mr Hall at once wrote back and asked questions about his sons son's death Then came a letter from Mr Breeding dated Jan 1 1947 which stated in part 41 1 I I c I i received your fine letter ye Yesterday yester yesterday Yester- Yester t 1 day and was surely glad to hear from fromI I you There were several of us boys who would have liked to have written to you about Eldon's death but the censor would not permit it it- itI will r I P will vill try to tell you all I r know about Eldon although it brings back some awful memories I III became acquainted with him in Hawaii That is where he joined our company We came down there from Attu We Ve had a wonderful time in hi Hawaii Eldon and I went to Honolulu Honolulu Honolulu Hono Hono- lulu together several times We Ve left there and went to the Marshal Is Islands Islands Islands Is- Is lands then we came back to Hawaii again for a rest Finally we took off for the Philippines That was a long tiresome trip and we had it pretty rough for quite a- a while The next thing was loading up and getting ready to go to New Guinea That's where we went from Leyte We Ve were on an L L. S S. S T. T and most of our jeeps drowned out loading loading load load- ing them We Ve were all wading in water about waist deep and that may maybe maybe maybe be what saved my life I III was standing on the sunny side of the ship trying to dry out when the plane hit us One of my friends invited me to go on the thc other side inthe in inthe inthe the shade just about three minutes before it hit Some of the boys had some parrots on the back of the ship and that's where most of the boys were atI atI at I III dont don't think it was shock that hat killed Eldon Mr HalL He had a hole in his forehead just above his right eye He was taken off our ship that night and put on another one We Ve received word word the next morning that he was dead The concussion of the tile blast n might have blown his watch off One of cf the theother theother theother other boys had his watch blown off about all I can think of to tell you now Maybe I 1 can think of some more later on and if I do I will certainly write and tell you about it it Later on in the ilie letter Mr Breeding wrote I III got married since I came back and have a very sweet wife She is sitting here watching me I ar arrived arrived nr- nr rived home a year ago last Oct and was really glad to get home as all nIl the boys were He sent some pictures he had of Eldon but asked Mr Hall HaIl to send them back All of them were taken in Hawaii o o |
