J Hatten flatten Carpenter Mantis Manti's oldest resident will note his birthday anniversary this coming Sunday April 4 To celebrate the event the family plans to gather at his home on Saturday Mrs Royal Madsen Edith and family are expected to come from Salt Lake City and his sons Edwin Eugene and Gerald and families of Manti will be on hand for the event Unable to attend will be a son Dr Alvin Carpenter of Logan Mr Mi Carpenter was born in Devonport Devenshire Devonshire England April 4 1861 lie He grew to manhood man man- manhood hood in England and after spending a n year in A Australia came to America On the voyage voyage voyage voy voy- age from Australia he met two Mormon missionaries and was converted to the L D S church On arrival in America he went directly to Salt Lake City and later came to Manti where he married Matilda 1 Sophia Alder Al Alder Alder Al- Al der on June 12 1889 1809 She died in 1920 and on September 20 20 1920 he married Lydia E. E Schramm of oC Payson in the Manti Man Man- ti Temple l Mr Ir Carpenter retired just last summer summer after aCter serving actively as assistant recorder in t the ii e Manti Temple for 40 years He lIe has been an ardent church worker worker worker wor wor- ker filling a mission to Somoa was a member of the North NorthWard NorthWard Ward Yard bishopric for 21 years and since 1919 has been patriarch patriarch patri patri- arch for the South Sanpete Stake For a years few-years Mr Carpenter Carpen Carpen- ter tel resided in Salt Lake City whee he worked in the City recorders recorder's office and later Intel served served served ed as ns cashier of the Manti 1 City Bank for a period of 16 10 years He is credited with doing much research and genealogy on his own family lines as well as having helped others in their search for genealogy It has been a custom for Mr 11 Carpenter to attend General Conference twice each year us usually usually us- us being in Salt Lake City for or his birthday He was notable not notable able to attend conference last year as he had just undergone surgery and this year he will remain at al home to hear hem conference conference con con- I I ference on the radio or perhaps perhaps perhaps per per- haps see it on television |
