T h i n ki n ' that a few items from my no'e t he interesting to bo k mi-rli- of the readers of your valuable piper. I take pleasure m forwarding vou a few of the most interesting facts. I left here with mv brother on Friday morning, May 14th, ork 18S, and arrived in New Mav City Thursday morning 20th, 1883, (after having lam off one d ty in Chicago for a rest. We were inline liatelv conveyed to what is known as the Presbyterian Hospital situated on 70th street and 5th. Avenue. On Satmd v May 22nd, the operation (which caused the death of my brother! was perform'd. He w is operated upon on Saturday at 5 ocock p. m. and di 'd Sunday ra rning at about 10 a. m. He was buried in the Southern cemeerv on Long Island. Monday 'lay 1886. Bro. John ' W.' Young conducting the funeral services. In a few 1 lys I had somewhat recovered from my bereavement, and began to look arouiVl a little. On.Mav 26th, J. presented a copv bf the Home Sevtinel to the Eekhardt hoys and although I did not net as an agent for- the paper,, yet I imagine I was the w cause of .the Home S .ntinel its apncarance every making ; week in New York City. In the afternoon of the sahie day I visited Central Park. iThis is a verv beautiful, as well as a mile Being Very large park. wide ami nearly 3 miles long, containing 906 acres all of which is handsomely decorated . with grass, flowers and trees. The main points of interest "are the menagerie. Metropolitan Museum and the Egyplian Obelisk. . I will endeavor to give a brief disnription of the latter. The Egyptian Obelisk was presented to the City of New York by the Kedive of Egypt. Lieut. Commander Gorringe, obtained possession of the Obe lisk and place! it in Central . Park, New York Citv, at an expense of nearly $100,000. ;It was swung into position Janutry 22nd, 1881. The height of the Obelisk from base to tip is 66 feet 2 inches. The measurement square through the base is 7 fpet 8 inches. The entire weight of the structure is 219 j tons. Since it was quarried near the torrid zone, it has traversed the entire length of Egypt, most of that' of the Mediterranean sea, and th tvhole width of the Atlantic Ocean a distance of over 6,000 mile Having in the course' of its long 'existance seen Moses; Pharaoh, raid his host going to their'deslruction in the Podea; Alexander the Great on his victorious expedition through fhe land of Goshen, and is now looking doVrn on tbemillion dwellers of New York Citv, xvhoSe Site even wa unknown t theEaslern world, when this Obelisk had an existence of two thousand years. There was one animal in par ticular at the menagerie which attracted my attention very much.viz: the man monkey." This animals head, hands and feet resemble those of a human being very much. I was told that he took his meals twice a day. and would not eat without a knife, fork and napkin. Tuesday May 27th. Went and saw a numler of large building of the citv, such as the Post Ollice. Sloped a short time at West Point, and then went up as far as Newburgh of about 65 miles did a not return until after dark in the evening. , Monday May, 31st. was decoration day, and in the morning I went up to see the Parade. It was the grandest thing of the Kind I ever saw. The parade strted at the Windsor Hotel, at 9:30 a. m. and did not get by until 1 2:30 p. in. just three hours steady inarching. I never saw so in my people in all my life. In the afternoon went to the Riverside Park, to see Grants Tomb. There were so many people there, that it was a very ilifii ult matter to get very near the tomb. But I managed to get a good look at it. There are a great many other things I might relate, but I fear I will tire the readers so I will return home.
