Earth Day, which is on April 12, was first observed in 1970, with the message: "New Energy for a New Era". On the Earth Day display there will be a variety of library materials with suggestions and activities for children and families to become more energy conscious. An assortment of cookbooks can be found from "Cooking with Three Ingredients" and "Low-Fa- t Way to Cook" to "Down Home Cooking". Volunteers needed for breast cancer 5K run The Susan G. Komen Foundation is looking for volunteers to help with its sixth annual Race for the Cure - 5K run against breast cancer The race will be held on Saturday, May 1 1 , at The Gateway, 90 S. 400 W. "Although the race is in May, we are encouraging people to sign up now for the many volunteer positions, " said Cindy T. Jackson, Volunteer coordinator. Available positions include: registration, distribution, race down, foodbeverage distribution, info table, troubleshootdata entry, ing, check-in- , starting line support, merchandise sales, balloon arch, course monitor, finish line and other responsibilities. Brief training sessions will be provided. "We would never be able tjo successfully coordinate the nation's largest 5K racing event involving more than 1 .3 million participants in 112 cities, without the help of our volunteers," Jackson said. 'This year 203,500 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,200 will die. By volunteering for Race for the Cure, you are helping to save lives, maybe even the life of someone you who died of breast cancer at age 36, the foundation is dedicated to eradicating breast cancer as a disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. The Komen Foundation has laid the groundwork for some of today's most promising breast cancer treatments' by raising more than $300 million and awarding more than 400 research grants.
