Show 8 The Magna Times AVest Valley News, Thursday, May 1 0, 2001 Lifestyle West Side Story delivers gripping performance By DEBBI OLSON Editor The Hale Centre Theatre has presented a gripping and emotional tale of how violence changes peoples lives with their current production of West Side Story. Opening night performances Saturday left audience members in tears and often wondering how to applaud tragedy in light of stellar performances by an outstanding cast. From the first entrance by the Jets, climbing onto the stage from chain link fences used as the backdrop for the playground, the performances remain strong as it tells the tale of two rival gangs fighting for the same turf. The Hale theater makes the most of its versatile theater in staging the fenced playground and basketball courts, to the community dance floor to the balcony in a back New York City Ally. Add to that magnificent voices who perform the award winning songs of Bernstein and Sondheim and West Side Story can be credited as one of the most powerful musical productions done by the fire-esca- Andrew Barrus, as Riff, leads the DUST continued from page 7 added to the problems. What we believe happened is that we had the grass starts comimg up and then we had a freeze in early April, which killed the grasses and dried out the tailings, Williams said. When the weather patterns changed we had some very strong winds come up and thats when the dust blew into Magna. Kennecott was in the process of dying out that particular tailings empoundment, chasing out .he water and planting rye and whole wheat grasses, which would prevent the dried tailings from getting airborne. "The grass has been successful in the past in keeping the dust down. We were devistated whenn the grass didnt grow as expected." Farmer said. This came from a relative small area of the tailings empoundment. There was about a 1,500 by 4,000 square foot area where the seeds hadnt sown. In addition to piping more tailings into the empoundment, helicopters were brought in to drop w ater , on the dried out tail Coadi House 6. We moblized and put water out on it immediately, but it wasn fast enough to keep it from blowing, Williams said. "We were racing to put pipes and polymers, down. The area should be resaturated with water and a polymer coating by May 15. The Environmental Protection Agency measured air quality as being above normal limits twice in the last month, but only once in the time that the dust blew into the city. It is unclear if that was caused by Kennecott operations or by other causes. Williams said that the residual metals in the dust was not harmful. The tailings dust could contain minute particles of arsenic, lead, cadmium and copper. According Bill Adams, a Kennecott environment specialist, levels of each mineral is far less than EPA standards and should not be a health concern. Average metal concentraitions in 10 tailings samples taken in April indicated that there was only 30.7 parts per million of arsenic, 16.5 ppm of lead, 1.11 ppm of cadmium and 716 ppm of copper. Typical EPA recom Out Coat Pictures Suu CeoJr Copper Chet mended levels are 100 ppm for arsenic, 500 ppm for lead, 40 ppm for cadmium and 2,000 ppm for copper. Safety, health and environmental issues are not just a priority for us, its a necessity, Farmer said. The tailings are the left-ovmaterial left in the rock mined at Kennecott after the usable minerals are taken out. It is a of the ore crushing, grinding and flotation processes used by Kennecott. Once the minerables er are extracted the tailings are transported as slurry in a 60-inc- TRAFFIC continued from page to Lake Ridge Elementary instead of allowing their children to walk. Since 1906, more than 1.5 bil- lion tons of tailings have been stored in the 5,700 acre impoundment area. The accumulation of the tailings raises the dyke levels approximately seven to eight feet each year. The tail- 1 and Brandon Cecala, who share the role of Tony on alternative nights are nearly perfect in their musical performances and their ability to create emotion. It is often easy for audience members to forget they are watching a play without becoming emotionally involved with the characters. Maria, played by both Emily Morgan and Ashlee LaPine capture the young Puerto Rican emigrants enthusiasm of now being an American and not allowing culture and rivalry to overshadow her feelings for Tony. Andrew Barrus as Riff in all performances proves his leadership of the gang, and the actors throughout his strong, youthful performance. Marilyn May Montgomery expertly directed the choreography of the musical doing more on the small stage than one would think possible with a large cast, while 45 miles per hour. Despite the emotional portrayal of characters. West Side Story tempers it with humorous interludes with the Jets amusing performance of Officer Krupke and the Sharks teasing performance of America led by Anita, played by Erin Royal and Joy Montoya, and Bernardo, played by Monte Garcia and Josey Suarez. And in the end, as Maria loses her youthful innocence and enthusiasm to being able to hate. West Side Story reminds everyone that the story is timeless and universal as it fits into todays culture.
