Show Times-Thursda- Page May 6, 1 982 y, SSSSi From my si?afidh padl by PEGGY ADAMS Why is it that the best movies always come (Hi Sunday night at 11 :30? Or does it just seem that way since I have to be up bright and early Monday morning? Im sure that the program executives at the local stations rub their hands together and spend hours on the phone plotting to run things that way. They always play a movie that I saw and remember as being really good. On the other hand, when I have Monday off the movies on all the cannels are ones that arent worth popping popcorn over. I have sat up until the final scenes of some real losers only to discover that they didnt just start out slow, but also finished that way too. Can you imagine how the actors and actresses feel when they see themselves on the tube, and their mouths dont match the words they are saying? It must be really humiliating to realize that some sound mixer who doesnt know what hes doing can ruin your Academy Award winning performance with the touch of a button. Some of the movies where people started out are now hysterical. Its awful what a starving actor will do for a buck. Raymond Burr, who came into my life as Perry Mason, super sleuth, once chased Godzilla all over Japan. Or maybe it was twice he chased it. Ronald Regan gets all the jokes about Bonzo, but Ive seen some that were worse by a whole lot. In these days of intellectial pursuit and trying to figure out who is trying to over throw the government in any given film, Elvis at the Fair looks pretty rediculous. All those Easter vacations from school where everybody went to the beach seem like they came from another planet. Beach party movies have always got to me. I sat through a real joke once. 1'k hours of riding the surf that bored me stiff. I was only 14 at the time, and I still realized that it didnt have a plot. You know it had to be bad. Todays films have to be realistic. The only thing they dont tell you is how to drive a Mercedes, have your hair done all the time and have a St. Laurent wardrobe that you discard for minor annoyances (lost buttons, sagging hems, wrong color, etc.( on an income that would starve a chicken. Jane Fonda never has these problem Ive noticed. Oh well, she never appeared in the blob movies either. Cancer Facts: Cancer and the Delaney Clause " Four hundred thousand Americans die annually from cancer. Recently revelations testing and the possible link with cancer in Utah has made everyone more aware of this disease and its destruction. Combined with the existing fear from the overexposure to radiation, is the panic fostered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It seems that nearly everything we eat. according to FDA, is hazardous to our health and the reason is simple - the Delaney Clause. The Delaney Clause says basicly, every food product or food additive must be banned, absolutely, if after appropriate tests, it is found to induce cancer in man or animals. For this reason, we now have an end to the use of various chemicals which cannot be directly linked to cancer in humans. Each had been banned, or may soon be banned, because of the Drivers license fee increase By law, driver licenses will cost $10.00 instead of $5.00 beginning May 3, 1982. A motorcyde validation will go from $5.00 to $8.00 or it it is just arenewal it will be $5.00. For example, someone renewing both his or her driver license and motorcyde validation would be charged $15.00 on or after Monday, May 3rd. If someone is renewing a driver license and getting a motorcyde validation for the first time or has a lapsed license with a motorcyde validation, it will cost $18.00 under the new rates. The $10.00 fee is for new licenses, lapsed licenses, and renewed licenses. This may be operators or the various chauffeur licenses. Duplicate licenses, where a license has been lost or damaged or where someone wants a new picture, will go from the current $3.00 to $5.00 ($10.00 with a motorcyde validation) on May 3rd. Identification cards for those who do not have or need a driver license will also increase to $5.00 from the current $2 .00. Perhaps the most significant item related to the increase in driver license fees are those costs assodated with reinstatement of the driving privilege. Anyone whose license has been suspended or revoked due to excessive points, drinking and driving, no insurance, etc. shall be required to pay a $25.00 reinstatement fee in addition to the regular licensing fees prior to regaining their driving privilege. In addition, individuals who fail to comply with the terms of traffic citations will be asked to satisfy those obligations and will be charged $25.00 in addition to me regular licensing fees prior to driver license renewal. Senior citizens driver license renewals have not been changed, and shall remain at $3 .00 ($6 .00 with a motorcycle validation). Anyone whose driving privilege has been suspended or revoked and who is required to demonstrate proof of financial Delaney Clause. In the case of saccharin, one Canadian study produced bladder cancers in laboratory animalas that were literally gorged with the artificial sweetener. The result was the uproar which pushed Congress to seek an independent study. The data is in. and the National Academy of Sciences says the Delaney Clause is too complicated, inflexible and inconsistent. The rigidity of the statute brought a the denoundation from thorough Academy. Studies involving thousands of, diabetics (and different thousands of bladder cancer vidims). have established no correlation between saccharin and cancer in humans. According to the Academy of Sdences. the FDAs decree, because of the Delaney Clause, is irrational. Dr. Elizabeth Whalen, a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health, in independent research, came to the same condusion and added her denoundation to that of the National Academy of Sdences. In addition. Dr. Whalen, and her assodates in the nonprofit American Council on Sdence and Health, questioned faulty research and theories of chemically induced cancer. The Council points to the 30 year escalation in American chemical use with the statistical decline of the inddence of cancer in the U.S. What is most urgently needed, it appears, is the immediate repeal of the inflexible Delaney Clause and the initiation of a graded ruling on substances as proposed by the National Sdence Foundation; namely, low. moderate and high risk based on the best sdentific studies. A SltB responsibility to the Department must do so with a form SR-2- 2 Motor Vehicle Liability Policy. No other form of motor vehicle insurance will be accepted. For extra convenience to the public the Driver License Stations in Ogden, the State Fairgrounds. West Valley and Orem will stay open until 00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Usual hours are weekdays 8 .00 a.m. to 5 :00 p.m. Charitable organizations All of us have been solicited by phone to purchase a variety of practical household items . to benefit some charitable organization. Many of us give willingly, thinking we can always use the touted household item and that we are helping out a worthy cause at the same time. But do you know where your money is going? A wise consumer will ask the caller conwhat percentage of the tribution will reach the organization for whom they purport to be calling. It would be well to check with the charity to determine if they have people in the field and if they are given an I.D. for purposes of identification. All too frequently the charitable the to reach amount organization is a meager 12 percent of your donationor none at all. A consumer would be well advised to purchase the household items at the grocery store and contributions directly to the organization involved. Since funding was - and is - a problem for the Garden City Library, donated books sounded right in line with its budget. There was. however, - a catch. The Library of Congress doesnt send out its surplus books; they have to be picked up. And a trip to Washington to pick up free books is not free. Thats where I got involved. Mrs. Garrett wrote me a letter, explained the situation, and asked if I could help. After contacting the Library of Congress, I found that I could. With the approval of Mrs. Garrett, I appointed my secretary. Cindy Pearson of Ftovo, to be the Washington, D.C. representative of the Garden City Library, and that was all the Library of Congress required. Cindy collected over 500 books, boxed them up. and sent them off to Garden City, where 1 understand tney substantially increased the librarys collection. With that. Cindys career as a librabian was begun. Further requests came in from library and school groups from all over the state. I forwarded them to Cindy, and she and her shopping cart have become regulars in the Library of Congresss surplus book division. Shes picked up 800 books for the North Sanpete School District. 900 for the Delta Public Library and over 1,000 for the Enterprise S drool. Salinas public library is next on the list. 0 What does a shipment of free books mean to a town like Delta? Its a big boon to our public library, said Vance Bishop. Deltas tity manager. With the growth were experiencing due to the power project, our library usage is increased, yet people are disillusioned with the age of the books and the selection. The addition of 900 books to our collection is really beneficial. Cindy says statements like that make her trips to the Library of Congress worth it. I agree with her. and encourage any other interested libraries or schools to give us a call. : |
