Show THE COLLEGE FRACAS. Tiik Rkimhimgan believes that conservative con-servative thought and language should mark the attitude of the people toward to-ward the present college difllculty. It Is altogether probable that the recent failure of tlic board to transact business busi-ness has not wholly tho significance that cither "antls" or "stand patters" pat-ters" place on It, and most certainly Intense fcellnir, extravagant expression, expres-sion, accusations and a wide spread agitation must result detrimentally to tho college itself. Tiik Kklhjiili-can Kklhjiili-can voices this sentiment after as careful Investigation as It has been possible to make In four days time. Whatever attempt has been made to inject politics Into this matter Is to be deplored, but wc are not yet prcpaied to accept that this )s as far I reaching as Is repicsented, and hardly believe that tills can bo determined until there is further opportunity I for demonstration. Should it be-I be-I come so apparent that there is ! no longer a reasonable doubt of an lOrganl.ed ell'oit to make tho college a center of a political struggle, then I the Looan Hki'Uiimcan will light tho situation with all tho strength at Its I command. To place the A. C. of U., or any other school in this state where It may be buffeted about by political winds would be an outrage beyond conception almost, and one which must meet with the severest condemnation condem-nation of overy thoughtful person with a sense of honor and the slightest knowledge of the duty he owes himself, him-self, his children, the state and nation. na-tion. Unless there is organised effort the ditllculty Is but a passing one and need not cause undue alarm. Tho personal clement that enters into this ditllculty Is not the people's 'concern at tho present time. The lack of harmony In tho faculty is con-j con-j lined to two professois, one of whom i hasalrcaly signified his Intention to resign In case Vies. Kerr is retained and tho other will have the opportunity oppor-tunity of meeting charges which will i be preferred. The board of lcgents, seven in number, will handle tho question, ques-tion, and wc arc not jet convinced , that any member of that board will .permit any other feeling that his 'sense of justice and right and his loyalty to the Interests of the A. C. of I U. and the people of Utah to Influence his action. The action of Thomas Smart, a new Cache county member of the board of regents, In refusing to join with the old members of the board at the recent re-cent meeting, created a furoro among many who in all probability have not gone into the matter deeply, and ho has been the victim of severest censure. cen-sure. Wc belicvo that this is hasty and that if Mr. Smart has made a mlstako In this it has been u mistake of the head and not of the heart. To say the least, Mr. Smart's position at the recent meeting was exceedingly delicate. Ho is a new member of tho board, unfamiliar with the ciucstlons in hand and yet placed In that position posi-tion where his action was tho decisive one. That ho should hcsltato to jump Into tho gap la natural. That Mr. Smart was a tool in the hands of his brother, President W. II. Smart, of Wahsatch. and acted wholly in ac-j ac-j cordance with ecclesiastical design and against his will is an accusation that Tin: Hki-uiimi'An refuses to accept at this time. Nor can we accept the Tho Tribune's Tri-bune's attitude toward this situation In s.0 far as it Is accuses "tho church" of "polygamlstlc design," etc. At the present time The Hki-uhmcan, (and It's editor is a Gentile) can find no evidence of this, and does not behove be-hove that "the church" Is concerned In tho matter at all. The people who have fomented the difllculty that exists arc L. A. Merrill, a professor who has not been In haimony with Mr. Kerr's policy for some time;Dr. Wldtsoo another professor out of line witli Pres, Kerr; J. M. Tanner, who was deposed at the time Pres. Kerr assumed the reins at tho A. C ; Wlllard Wll-lard Done, who was dismissed from tho Hrlgham Young College at the time Mr. Kerr was president there-dismissed there-dismissed for unprofessional conduct after a careful Investigation by the board of trustees; D. R. Roberts, who labors under the Impression that Pres. Kerr used his Influence against him in the recent election and ill treated him at another time; and possibly two or three others. It is also said that GOV. CUTLER'S policy for this In-stltutlon In-stltutlon Is not In harmony with Pres. fcerr's policy, and this fact coupled with the work and representations of the others mentioned have brought about the present state of affairs. Tiik Reiuhmcan believes "the church" is wrongfully accused of Interference; In-terference; that there is a probability that Thomas Smart Is criticised unjustly; un-justly; and that the personal differences differ-ences between the obstreperous members mem-bers of the faculty will be settled by the board after a careful Investigation. Investiga-tion. Whether there are deep seated political designs, or a well laid plan looking to tho ousting of Kerr and tho final removal of the A. C. to Salt Lake city can bo determined only by later develoDments and until then Tiik Rk-vunucAN Rk-vunucAN advlsts conservative expression. ex-pression. ' In the meantimo a magnificent Institution In-stitution on tho hill, a student body that Is a unit for him, and a faculty of 01 with but two dissenters stands as a monument to President Kerr. |
