Show FASHION NOTES The Turkish embroideries on muslin are used for scarfs [scarves] on the wide summer huts. The upright piano of the day is incomplete without a long overlay of fringed and embroidered linen or satin thrown across the top and falling at the sides. The Languedoc and Raguso? point laces come in such large figures that they do not pleat effectively; hence they are only slightly gathered when forming frills. A stylish hat for the seaside, in Parisian taste, is a blue and white feather straw of mush-room [mushroom] shape, the wide brim lined with blue silk, with a pleating of red ribbon on the edge, and a scarf of navy blue tulle with large red close (?) dots wound around the crown. The scarf is three yard long, in all, and held in place by a cluster of dark-red gauze poppies. Foulard handkerchiefs of certain patterns are ‘chosen' for breakfast caps. These have cream white centers with cashmere borders. They are so folded that the white part forms the crown, and the gay figures surround it, two of the ends being gathered in pointed leaf shape to make the loops of a bow in the back. Two narrow pleated frills of Breton lace then edge this border. The polka-dotted handkerchiefs are also made up in such caps. The rustic baskets with rooted woodplants sold on the street, bring such a whiff of freshness into a city house that one cannot easily deny the luxury of bringing them home. But gas and dust are death to the partridge berry and princess pine. To keep such baskets they should be kept in a room without heat, kept in the shade, and the basket dipped into water daily. A wet cloth folded lightly over it at night keeps the plants very fresh. The babe bonnets are very pretty for mignonne, charming women. These bonnets are not made over lames (?), but the outside and lining are stirred together over fine rattan (?), with soft crown. A model is sky-blue, satin marveilleuse with blush rose lining, the drawn silk standing in a wide border round the face, which does not slant (?) any other trimming. A fringe of wild lilies of the valley droops from the curtain, and a large pale blue ostrich tip is laid on the side of the bonnet. |
