Murmy, of Kentucky, as Governor of Utah Territory, and Norman Buck as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Idaho. <br><br> ---- NEW YORK, Jan. [January] 29. J. J. Hawkini?, until last year a High Priest among the Mormons, lectured here last night. [unreadable section] will be to drive out all outsiders by means of over taxation. This is the great desire of the Mormons, for then they will have a Mormon legislature, Mormon judges and Mormon rule generally. They favor a democrat for President because they believe that more quickly through that party they can obtain control. They are rapidly getting the Indians under their control for their belief is that the Indian is in the future to fight their battles for them. Already their influence is widely extended over several tribes. Besides this the Mormons are purchasing arms and ammunition continually. This is done through the instruction of their Bishops. They have now plenty of firearms. The Mormons have a population of 130,000, and they can muster a force of 25,000 able-bodied men. <br><br> ---- LONDON, Jan. [January] 31. A rich landowner of the Nea, Barcelona, his wife, three daughters, son and two women servants were all found murdered in their beds. The deed was apparently done with a hatchet. The house was ransacked. A man named Swinchend and his two sons have been arrested. <br><br> ---- LONDON, Jan. [January] 30. By a fire damp explosion in a colliery at Melsen?, Saxony, yesterday, ten miners were killed and nine injured. Nine persons were in the pit at the time. The explosion is unaccounted for. <br><br> ---- OTTAWA, Jan. [January] 30. A grave digger had thrown three or four shovelfuls of sand on the coffin of a small pox victim when he fancied he heard a noise. The coffin was raised, and it was found that the person was still alive. <br><br> ---- SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. [January] 31. John Flanagan, a well known merchant, committed suicide last night by morphine. He was a wholesale liquor dealer, and was indicted by the last United States grand jury for not keeping a proper record of his transactions, which it is believed preyed on his mind and induced him to commit suicide. <br><br> ---- Two more cases of small pox appeared on the quarantine hulk, among the crew of the City of Peking. It is known that the quarantine City of Peking has been loosely enforced and it is feared the disease has been introduced into the city. <br><br> ---- NEW YORK, Jan. [January] 30. The Tribune says: E. B. Washburne, now here en route to Boston, denies that he is a candidate for the governorship of Illinois, and also that he stands in any other relation to the presidential canvass than that of a supporter of Grant. The Tribune says: This does not prevent his friends canvassing his possible strength in the event of Grant's withdrawal, and it is generally believed in such a contingency, his name would undoubtedly go before the convention with a strong following. This view of the possibilities of the canvass receives no encouragement from him however. He feels so sure that Grant will be tendered and will accept the nomination, that any talk of possibilities and contingencies does not concern him in the least. <br><br> ---- CHICAGO, Feb. [February] 4. Total coinage of the U.S. mints during January, was $8?,576,500, of which $2,450,000 in silver dollars. <br><br> ---- The captain of the brig Augustine which came ashore at Atlanticville, yesterday, shot himself when he saw that the vessel must be wrecked. The crew were saved with difficulty. Severe storms raged all over the east. Serious damage caused along the Hudson river and the Atlantic coast; many lives lost. France is considering the question of a commercial treaty with the United States. |
