Sap is rapidly rising in the trees, and box elders that have been trimmed lately, "bleed" quit eprofusely. For some days past a force of men have been engaged in beautifying Tabernacle Square with [unreadable word] effect. A Few nights ago a lady of this city left a quilt out on the clothes line over night, when someone tore it in two an dhug it over the line again. The following "green fruit" was shaken from the "local" branch of the News staff: "Logan City wants a bank. You'll find plenty of them in your new canal." There is a standing insitation for all carpenters, who can do panel work, to come and work on the Temple, on tithing or donation accounts. 22 C.O. Card, Supt. Lost, on Monday evening, Mar. 7th, between the Theatre and the U.O. Foundry, a moss agate act for an adjustable cuff button. The finder will be rewarded by leaving it at the LEADER office. Mr. ROBERT PRINGLE and a Mr. Smith have engaged in making scroll work for furniture, &e. They also do wood carving, and specimens of their work now in their shop on Second street are very creditable. THOMAS WILLIAMS, Fsq., a highly respected citizen of Hyrum, is very sick; he has been subject to attacks of illness for a long time, and has lately taken a serious relapse. Strong hopes, however, are entertained of his recovery. ENGINEER WOOLCOT of the U.P. went up to Pocatello on the U. & N. some days since to commence the surveying of the Portland road. It is thought, but not definitely settled that Pocatello will be the junction of the Portland and U. & N. roads. R. Kirkham, artist, has lately taken a fine photograph of our [unreadable word] friend, Mr. John Squires. The picture represents the subject surrounded by trees and bushes, an dholding his gun in hand as if about to raise it for a shot. The effect is very fine, and the picture is a gem. We learn from a gentleman who left Hyrum on Monday morning last that bishop Lijenquist? Of that place was very sick at that time. A severe [unreadable word] was the cause of his illness. This is sad intelligence and we hope to be able to report the early convalescence of the patient. Last Monday "Dad" Peacock got on another "regular bender," tried to ride horseback into the house of a respectable citizen, was very profane and disturbed the peace flagrantly. Officer Pringle arrested him, and on Tuesday he was fined $15 by Judge Cranner. He left his house "in soak" for the amount. A gentleman of Salt Lake recently informed us that he frequently sent to Hammond's book store for books. A compliment to the book store, and to the town that supports it, and a poor commentary on Salt Lake booksellers. They may make "headquarters" of Salt Lake, a railroad "hub" of Ogden, but we'll make Logan the seat of intelligence; eh? |
