Show CONSIDERABLE INTEREST is manifested in political circles concerning the recent election in New York. From latest returns it appears the Democrats are on the gain and they claim to have a majority of 10,000, which the Republicans, however, dispute: The Times says "An unusually light vote was polled in this State, on Tuesday, outside the large cities the reports thus far received show that the Rep.? [Republican?] state ticket, with the exception of Austin?, for state treasurer, has been elected by a small majority, probably not more than 8,000 or 7,000. The result as regards the legislature is in doubt, the latest returns indicating that the senate is a tie and the assembly stands 65 Reps. [Republicans] to 63 Dems. [Democrats] The election of Talcott? and Gibbs?, Rep. [Republican] candidates for senators, in this city, is in doubt, but they are counted as successful in the above estimate." |
