I have no idea who paid for the ad But I do know they aren't cheap A rough esti- -' mate I’d say would be $500 I’m wondering if they got their money's worth? At the one held in Salt Lake They reported about 200 turned out t My hell there's close to a million people down there What kind of a majority is that? New York City has a population of at least 14 million and 14000 turned out? In San Francisco organizers claimed there were somewhere between 300000 and 350(XX) participating that day A national news group secured copies of the pictures of that supposedly huge huge group taken by police helicopters Made grid copies and then counted the people and told the organizers sorry there were only 65000 there I ? £ V: - Saddam Hussein is a big rotten ulcerated tooth in the jaw of the Iraq nation The only solution to healing it permanently Is to use die biggest and strongest set of force-pt- s avail- able and pull it! I ask each and every one of you war protesters this question Why oh why dp each of you throw your whole hearted support to Saddam while you are enjoying the freedom this country alloiws you? It’s probably because if you did it over there you’d get shot I am a veteran too amt I published my service record in the paper recently How about you protesters doing the same? You know like who why when and where I say take Saddam out now not later and the sooner the better! Maybe you guys do but I don’t want to have to keep looking over my shoulder to see who is sneaking up behind to stab me in die back for the rest of my life You protesters read and listen to die news and surmise you know the score but you don’t even know the game v’-? — I j i 2'? ' Elwin Allred Logan Remember Mitchell is mentally III To the editor With all the publicity and excitement surrounding die miraculous return of Elizabeth Smart it seems preposterous that very little has been said about Brian Mitchell’s mental illness This horrible ordeal has had a happy ending for the Smart family and we all rejoice with them We want answers and explanations In our quest for details we mustn’t forget the other side of this story Here is also an opportunity to understand mental illness and to take steps to do something about it! Anyone who has had any personal contact with someone suffering from a serious brain disorder recognizes immediately that Brian Mitchell is a very sick man Being sick he has done some despicable things but the tragedy is that these acts could have been prevented had he received appropriate medical treatment a long time ago He has a family who rec- ognized his illness When Brian’s brain chemistry became out of balance he became convinced that he was beyond reality that he was nearperfect and that lie had a mission to save the world These are very common symptoms of severe mental illnesses — a signal that help is needed! Society has been careful to protect these people’s individual civil rights by making it impossible for families to commit' loved ones to appropriate institutions where they can receive that help People can’t be forced into treatment against their will but if an individual refuses help we all suffer the consequences Ironically what we often fail to recognize is that these “civil rights” are taken away by the mental illness itself! Severe mental illnesses result in unacceptable social behaviors and distorted thought processes: We as onlookers see these people as weird bizarre and strange We treat them as outcasts and shun them because they don’t conform to our mores Some are fortunate in that they seek treatment themselves but the majority of these individuals do not even recognize their disorders This lack of insight is in itself a disorder a medical condition known as ‘ Anosog-nosiThey consider themselves “normal" and feel that everyone else is “sick” It is for this reason that they resist andor refuse medical treatment People who are very normal can be a’ See LETTERS on A7 RLVBO01QD PERFECTLY BAlAMCGDIWE - MHUEFM N6 AIL OF FRANCE!
