State Moves To Make Better Pheasant Hunting : : - 5 i - oPT1 C0I1SECUTIVE ? jlflifMi V,CT0RIES mAKE I MmWk mislom TIRES THE ' SS5r CHOOSE Xsll rheasant hunting in the State of Utah Is receiving top consid eratlon these days, Ross Leonard, Utah Fish and Game Director, said today as he announced plans for a state-wide pheasant rehabilitation study. . The State, having help from federal Pittman - Robertson funds, has already started setting set-ting up a series of pheasant sanctuaries, all of them located strategically in the State's best pheasant country. Announced today for the first time by the Utah director is the purchase of a 60-acre plot for an upland bird refuge near Logan in Cache County, and a 40-acre piece in Boxelder County near Tremonton in the heart of this choice blrdland. Eighty acres have been pur chased at Roosevelt, and 60 acres in the Duchesne vicinity. Negotiations Nego-tiations are under way for an 80-acre plot in the Vernal district, dis-trict, and 40 acres in Emery County near Castle Dale. The game department, Leonard pointed out, has already purchased pur-chased and planted , a 120acre piece in the Cedar City region, and another near ' Burraston Pond in Juab County. Richfield sanctuary between Richfield and Glenwood in a top-rate pheasant country has also been started. With this ground, Leonard ex plained, the State will seed it properly, and make the necessary improvements on it for ideal game bird cover. Part of each plot will be fenced with vermin- tite wire to keep rodents and other predators off the premises so young birds can be raised. These refuges will be closed at all times and guarded. When the birds become too plentiful on them they will be live-trapped and moved to other regions near by, Leonard said. "We are going into this pheasant pheas-ant program thoroughly," the di rector stated. "We have several full-time experts working on pheasant production in this State. We will handle each sanctuary differently, according to the natural surroundings and the factors particularly effecting that locality. We expect some definite results on the pheasant picture in a few years." Mr. and Mrs. E. C.
