"The Health Department has commented and has told us over the years that we have by far the clear- est and cleanest pool water," said Cooper. "Our facilities and maintenance are the best in the county." Every year the county does a surprise inspection on all the public swimming pools. "They like to come here because we aren't afraid to have them come and in fact we welcome them and also they always know that we are going to pass inspection," added Cooper. The city pool is in its nineteenth year of operation, as long as in fact that Cooper himself has been working there. In keeping the pool above standard, the city has invested in equipment to replace old stressed systems. The city has bought a $43,000 new rapid sand filter system through a low interest loan. The addition of the system reduces the quantity of chemicals used and because of that, they will be able to more than offset the purchase by decreasing other maintenance costs. Last year the city spent $6,000 to child proof the fence even though it already met the health code. It was done because a child had been able to get through the fence, climb up the "Cool Runnings" slide and slide down before being caught. "The life guard notified the coworker at the bottom of the slide and the youngster was rescued as soon as she hit the water at the bottom of the slide," said Cooper. An automatic leveler is another addition to the pool system. The leveler will automatically turn the water flow on or off to prevent overflow. This year they have also added slide pads of foam rubber to use on "Cool Runnings." The pads will prevent wear and tear on swim suits. Time slots are limited and are filling quickly but the pool can still be rented for summer Monday through parties p.m. for Saturday from $150.
