All are spread across a woodgrained table. S.S. NORWAY "NORWEGIAN CARIBBEAN LINES" FREE FILM PRESENTATION But the fruits and vegetables are far from appetizing. The yellow grapefruit has a gray mold growing on it. And the skin of the tomato is wrinkled with age. Same with the bell pepper and mushrooms. Childrens faces wrinkle with disgust. Yuck they say, as they survey the round and oblong shapes on the table. But their teacher, Judy Forman, did not bring the food to class today for the students to eat. She brought them to make a point. The mold, she explains, is not bad. Its good. Its also helpful. How? The mold eliminates excess fruit and vegetables, she explaines. It decomposes the fruit so it doesnt stay on the ground forever and collect in huge piles. Mold and germs can actually be good, she tells the small children. And to help her make her point, she uses a set of petri dishes. A boy rubs a cotton swab across the gray matter on the grapefruit and then onto the petri dish. . Where else can germs be found? she asks. The kids minds start to churn. One by one they leave the classroom to collect germs. A girl finds germs on the cement sidewalk outside. A boy rubs his swab across the wall of the classroom. And a small girl runs the swab through her blond hair. A darkhaired boy runs to the bathroom where he is sure there are lots of germs. And yet another boy runs the swab across his tongue and, brushes it over his teeth. He thinks there may be germs in his mouth. The germs are collected in the petri dishes, which will be closely watched by the students. Next week in class theyll see the germs growing out of the red substance in the dishes. And their faces will again wrinkle. And choruses of yuck and ooooh will again echo through the room. But the germs in the dishes can be good, Ms. Forman explains.. Major medical advances have been made from scientists observing germs growing in petri dishes. And penicillin-- a widely was discovered used drug-als- o from observing germs growing in a petri dish, she claims. Ph. Ms. Smith said the program began because she and a friend were looking for something their children could become involved with during the summer to help fight boredom. We wanted something more than entertainment, she said. And the two also wanted a program where the children could do things they dont usually do in the schools. Since Ms. Smith is a certified teacher, she began to hunt for certified teachers and professionals in the field to teach the n. six week-lon- g OnIy$H 49 $1.49 Special Aug. 22 to 28 Eat--ki Bean Burrito (Enchilada Style) Customers .
