I started gymnastics when I was 6 and by the time I was 10 1 was competing in my first national tournament. By the age of 12 I had won the national tumbling award. That was the first year the Olympics were going to allow tumbling to be an Olympic event. It had taken years of hard work to even get the sport considered, so when I : found out that it would be an Olympic event I felt as if one of igiy lifetime goals was within 'peach. I felt very lucky to have $iade the team and dedicated Iqiany long hours in training as ; every other athlete does to per-- ; fleet my routine and then we iljeard President Carter would !not allow us to compete in Rus-;siI guess for those that had flever been there it was very disappointing but to me I felt we had something to stand for and 0 we backed down we would I have appeared weak. I really think most of the athletes were n Supportive of Mr. Carters but its still kind of hard. Rod Hill, BYU head coach, understood Beckys feelings in 'this respect as he has been the womens gymnastic coach for the 1972-7Olympic team. I guess its like I told the girls in preparation for this regional ;meet. They are the most dedicated of athletes. No real puts in the amount of hours in training that a gymnast does. The only person who com-$- s close is the person who trains for the dash for the Olympics. They train many tnany hours to run for 9 to 10 seconds. Well, gymnasts train, .in one season alone, 900 hours to Compete for just 50 minutes. You can take almost anyone in off of a street and give them Some basic instruction and have hem making baskets in an hour, almost anyone can play football in a recreational aspect, but try coming in off the street and do an uneven bar routine. j Ive seen P.E. majors who were required to take a gymnastic class work a whole semester and only be able to jnove on the top bar, maybe walk on the beam, do cartwheels and maybe a back walkover on the floor and jump pver the vault. i Its really scary when youre A OGDEN, UTAH... APRIL 21, 22 er d the instructor and you get these jocks who think because theyre as strong as an ox that they can walk in and start playing on the bars. The first time they get on beam they find that out how tough it is to be a gym- , nast. For Becky, competing for a University team involved a totally different way of life. When youre competing international- ly, everything is for yourself but college is totally team oriented. Not that that was hard to adjust to but I had to dedicate myself to what was best for the team, said Becky. And so Becky started the grueling workout all over again. Becky was weak in dance and beam work, said Coach Hill, and for a gymnast you have to have a strong dance background. As Becky got more into tumbling, she got away from the dance and more into the plans to have Becky continue with her career at BYU, but when Greg checked into how many credits he would lose in transferring from Weber State the decision to quit BYU was left up to Becky. I knew I wanted to be with Greg and I knew he would do anything to support me so I felt I needed to show him I felt the same way. I can continue my education at Weber so I decided to quit. Rod and Debbie have gymnastics. strength area Debbie worked her long and hard to get the rhythm back into her routine and though she had the strength for the bars she needed to sharpen her movements. She excels in the vault because of her speed and strength but the biggest improvement came in her beam. When youve been away for a long time, to go back up on that beam is frightening. But (J Becky has worked hard to give us all she could. Shes a real team leader and her international experience helps the girls see how to carry themselves even though they feel uncomfortable. Becky .is a team gymnast. She will try anything for the team and she feels thats what everyone should do. She shows great patience with the younger girls and her confidence rubs off on the other girls, said Coach Hill. Coach Hill has tried all kinds of deals to keep Becky on the team but Becky has found the something else she wants in her life and his name is Greg Wood. Greg and Becky went to Roy High together and have dated a long time. They are now planning on a June wedding.
