Show 4C Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1983 Warning Sign: Royals Will Contend for the Crown By KENT SOMERS Review gage, the car title or give up your , Sports Editor ROY Its a sign, like a ring around the moon meaning rain-i- s coming soon or a lightning strike meaning thunder is imminent. Not that Roy High Football Coach Ernest Jacklin is something of a wizard or anything, but dont bet the mort days off thinking the Royals wont make it to the state, play offs again this year. That simply doesnt happen to the Royals very often. After finishing second in the state in 1980 and winning the in 1981, the Royals slipped .'last year and didnt make it to le the state playoffs. But that could change, and although Jacklin chooses the adjectives to describe his team as d statescarefully as the man, you get feeling that Roy will be substantially improved over last year. Theyll be an improvement easily, Jacklin said after watching his ieam through a week of practices. The area that concerns Roy coaches the most is the interior of the offensive line, which lacks the humungous size of two years ago, said Jacklin. But, and be sure to read between the lines here, Jacklin said the same offensive line showed the most imgray-haire- provement and development during last week's practices. The offensive line should also be bolstered by the addition of Ogden High transfer Hank Fetler. Although Fetler is on a trip in Wyoming at the time, Jacklin said he was due to join the team late, last week and should add some bulk to the Roy line.Fetler, d who is a senior, offense both and defense played for the Tigers last year before jleaving the team in said Jacklin. But Jacklin said Roys biggest improvement this year over a year ago will be in the skill positions, and he is especially high on his two starting running backs, fullback Jeff Yoshimura and tailback Doug Nielsen. Both are strong and quick, said Jacklin. Nielsen can run with the best and has excellent speed for a kid his size. Nielsen is 0 and 200 pounds and and 180' Yoshimura is pounds. Nielsen runs the dash in 4.7 seconds, said Jacklin and is definitely a college prospect, as is Yoshimura. Yoshimura played quarterback for the Royals last but will move into the backfield this year, said Jacklin, 'where he feels more comfortable. The quarterback spot will be taken over by senior Steve Skidmore; Jacklin said the Royals will throw the ball more than last year, but look for Roy to take advantage of its two good running backs the majority of the time. Backing up Skidmore will be , 6-- 3, Richard McNeely, a junior, and Dave Tafoya, one of four or five sophomores that will help the Royals this season. Bryce Wilcox, a senior and John Naisbitt, a junior, will give the Royals depth at fullback. Brett Harrop, a senior, and Shane Opheikens, another sophomore, will play tailback behind Nielsen. The Royals are particularly deep at the receiver positions, although Jacklins starting tight end, Brent Hadley, will miss a few games after suffering a broken shoulder in a car accident this summer. Its just taking time, Jacklin said. Hes lucky to be alive. He survived, the car didnt. Taking Hadleys place at tight end will be either Mike LeBlanc, a junior who can fly, according ; 16-- 190-pou- 0, I se 6-- 3, 205-poun- Coe-wil- 6-- 3, 16-- 185-pou- 2, ! 6-- 4, 180-pou- 6-- 0, 165-pou- 6-- 1, r. c 686 V.
