Standing on the elevated tee, looking down a chute of trees, the golfer must hit his drive down the left side to have a shot at the green. Any amount of slice or hook on the drive will put the ball into the trees. The major change is being made on the green of the 17th hole, a 398-yar- d par-fou- r. The green on top of the hill is being replaced with one which will be to the left and below the present one in a small valley. The existing 17th hole is ah unfair hole because of the peculiar bounces a ball takes on the ridge, said Hualde. The new green will be doublewith bunkers in the front and a pond in the back. It will be ready for play by this summer. The present distance of the hole will not be altered, although the golfers second shot will be shorter due to hitting to a more level target. Another major change on the course is the position of -tiered area. d Ditches on the right side of number 4 and on the left side of the 12th hole will be filled and no longer played as a hazard. Hualde said this change will beautify the course and not penalize the poorer golfer who often times hit into these ditches. The county budgeted for these changes on Davis, which was built in 1963. Hualde reported that $47,000 approximately 86,000 0 382-yar- 335-yar- landing tee-sh- 135-20- d double-bogie- below the present teeing area, which will give the women a wider huge tree that protects the right side of the green. A sand trap guards the left side of the hard green, which slopes from the back to front. Add all that to a second shot that can be anywhere from yards and you have a hole that even God would be happy to get a par on. At nearby Royal Greens in Roy, the fifth hole, a is a great driving hole. par-4- , Lee Trevino once said that it is very hard to draw or hook a ball when there is trouble on the left. Trevino must have had number five in mind. Any hook or pull on the drive will put the ball over the fence which runs down the left side of the hole. However, a slice or fade will put the golfer farther away from the green on this dogleg left hole. A consistent afternoon breeze in the golfers face, and a boulder-hargreen make this a hole especially s are tough, where not uncommon. With holes like number five, a it is easy to see par-4- , why the Davis County Golf Course is the most heavily played course in the state, according to Course Pro Pierre Hualde. This is a thinking mans hole, one Nicklaus would love. A small lake on the left, and trees and a fence on the right side of the fairway keep golfers honest on their drives.' Three bunkers guarding an elevated green make the second shot a challenge. Leave the approach shot short and a long bunker shot, one of the toughest golf shots, faces you. Get too aggressive and the ball will bounce off the firm green into more trouble. The length of the hole wont kill you, although the second shot, ranging from a to a wedge, might. The 17th hole of the Valley View Golf Course in Layton is physically hard on a golfer. After 16 holes on a grueling, hilly par-course, this uphill will test a golfers legs. Arnold Palmer once wrote that he believes a par-- should be a hole you can reach the green in two and shots, but just laying-u- p is not a guarantee of pitching-od the blue tees on the 18th hole. The new tee will be located east of the present one and be elevated. This, along with the filling of half of the pond in the fairway, will give the shorter hitter more landing area on his tee shot. Also, the womens tee on the 13th hole, a par-5- , will be placed in an area 502-yar- d 463-yar- nine-hol- e rounds were played at the course in 1982, making it d 5 5 the most heavily played course in the state. a par. And thats as good a description of the 17th as any. It is possible to reach the green in two, but a bunker in front of the green will catch all but the longest hitter. At the Hill Field course, the seventh hole is a diabolical dogleg right par-- 4 of 420 yards that forces most golfers to try and cut the dogleg on the drive. However, thick rough on the right side will snag a ball and make it virtually impossible to reach the green in two shots. Bountiful Golf Courses 12th hole, a par-- of only 346 yards, is one of the best holes for its length in Utah. Smart golfers use a fairway wood or long iron off the tee because the drive must be hit straight. A small forest on the right and a hill which slopes down to a fence on the left will catch even e the slightest drive. The narrow wide fairway could be used to conduct a sobriety test. If you can walk down the fairway without going into the trees or down the hill, youre sober. The way to the pin is always traveled with a short iron to a small elevated green guarded by bunkers on both sides. Bountifuls contoured greens, which always break away from the mountains, add a final touch to this jewel of a hole. Farmington is one of the few courses in the area that plays as long as it says on the score card. Soccer Teams Close to Season's End County schools play good soccer, and Region Four is the toughest high school soccer region in the state.
