Trailing 10--7 after three periods, the Titans overwhelmed the Bountiful Braves at the line of scrimmage in the fourth quarter and ground out an impressive 22--10 win that improved the Titans' record to 3- -0 while dropping Bountiful to -2. "Their depth just paid off in the second half, said Bountiful coach Larry Wall following his team's loss. Weve suffered some key injuries, and they just wore us down up front. Although Olympus coach Tom Larson wouldnt agree completely with Wall, he did accept the basic premise. I dont know if we wore them down, but we were able to control the ball and the clock in the second half. The Braves ran just three plays from scrimmage in the third period and just 12 in the second half. They gained a mere 19 yards. The hosts got the ball on the kickoff for the second half, and just decided not to give it back. Two runs totaling six yards and an incomplete halfback option pass from Drew Eastman toward Brady Bahr was the sum total of Bountifuls third quarter offense. The offensive coordinator could have gone to the concession stands for a hot dog and not missed a thing. Yet despite dominating the play and using the clock, Olympus failed to score in the quarter and trailed by three as the third quarter came to a close. Bountiful's lead was. however, seriously threatened as the fourth quarter began with the ball resting on the nine yard line and Olympus having a first down and goal to go situation. The defense of Woods Cross had a hard time stopping the balanced attack of Cyprus. Cyprus quarterback Michael Jenkins threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Combined with Wood they moved the ball at will. We executed as well as we have all year, said Cyprus head coach Dave Peck. We are experienced, with a lot of seniors. I expect us to be good. Showing a lot of enthusiasm at the start of the game the Wildcats looked ready. I thought we were ready to play (but) we didnt get off too well, said Woods Cross head coach John Haning. Cyprus just proved to be too big for the Wildcats. Early in the third quarter Wildcats quarterback Rhett Neilson went down with an injury. Already with another quarterback injured they turned to sophomore Brian 28-- 0 Twitchell. Twitchell started off good but after an interception his confidence seemed shaken. Even after three interceptions and four fumbles (three which Woods Cross recovered) there was hope to build on. The secondary played well, led by sophomore Justin Menlove. Menlove covered his receivers like a blanket, stopping two passes that would have been sure touchdowns for Cyprus. Both Wood and coach Peck agreed the secondary for Woods Cross was tough. Next week the Wildcats travel to Jordan to take on the Beetdiggers. Saia Haivaka leads the Beetdiggers rushing attack. The Wildcats will have to find a way to stop Haivaka, or it might turn into another long night. Jordan does not have a good passing attack throwing only four times, and completing none, in a 41-- 7 loss to Alta. |
