Alta completed 14 ; of 25 passes for 124 yards, while Roy hit on 12 of 19 for 105 yards, but the Royals controlled the tempo of the game. They got an early lead with some great punting on the part of Brad McCaulley which kept the Hawks in a hole all afternoon and when Alta went to its passing game, the Royals were ready, and for the most-pakept the Hawks from making the big play. Roy picked off three Alta passes. 19-1- e. Although many of these contests pit Region 1 teams against adversaries, conference followers are looking anxiously to the game results as perhaps being indicative of their teams readiness to perform during playoff games. I ( 29-1- non-leag- non-leag- One such battle pitted the 3 Clearfield Falcons against the Brighton Bengals and if the results of this game are any indication of upcoming weeks, concentration will be the key as the Falcons prepare themselves for their conference foes. Pointing to the inability of the Clearfield team to capitalize on four Bengal fumbles as a significant factor in their loss, it was apparent that .Hancock will be looking in upcoming weeks to a more controlled Falcon effort. We got the breaks and turned the ball over. And because of that we gave them total control, stated Hancock. But just as the Falcons displayed moments of lax play, their afternoons performance was sparkeed by moments of brilliance. Tallying up yard after yard throughout the game and rushing for a spectacular 62 yard touchdown, Clearfields Free Cook refused to be bottled up and demonstrated the potential of the smooth moving Clearfield running game. In fact, it was Cook, according to Brighton coach Steve Dangerfield, that was the subject of close scrutiny by the hard hitting Bengal defense. Refering specifically to runningback Cook, Dangerfield stated that he thought they had done a good job controlling Clearfield's short running game. By PHIL KIRKWOOD Sports Editor LAYTON If Layton does manage to make it to the state tournament later on next month, there is one thing they can be sure of it will be a struggle. And coach Gary Hansen is the first to I admit that fact especially after watching his squad lose a lopsided 4 game to Hillcrest last Wednesday. Hillcrest played a good hard football game and we played a poor one, commented Hansen, referring simply to why the Lancers lost. We have had a lot of problems executing the fundamentals like blocking and tackling and we just cant seem to find a real team leader. We were looking to our seniors for that, but its just not there. With a 2 record in Region-- 1 play, the Lancers almost have to win their remaining two games of the season to have any chance of making the tournament. There is, however, a slight chance the Lancers could mpke their but Hansen says he wouldnt goal at be happy with that I wouldnt want to go if we didnt win the last two games, said Hansen. No one wants to go to the tournament with a losing record. All season long the Lancer offense has stayed pretty much with a basic option attack which requires executing the basic fundamentals to make it work. The Lancers will be hoping to control the game with good execution and put some points on the board when they face a powerful Gearfield team, today at 4:00 on Lancer turf. Our game plan is to play good, sound football and go right at them, said Hansen about the game. Layton has had some good games this season, especially when they knocked off top rated Brighton last month. Gearfield lost to that same Brighton team last Wednesday 0 in a nonleague contest. With four teams from Region-- 1 being able to qualify for the state tournament, it stands to reason that everyone but Sky View at 3 still has a shot at getting a berth.
