Show Lakeside Review, October 16, 1980, Page 7B Yufih Seeeir Hos Ppulir By PHIL KIRKWOOD Sports Editor Si years ago Chuck , ROY Bacon, region commissioner for American Youth Soccer in Kaysville, Utah, decided it was about time Utah had a South soccer league. At that time Bacon ftad just transferred to Hill Airforce Base from Torrence, Calif. He had been a soccer coach there for ten years so he knew the sport and how much fun it could be. ' But he had no idea just how fast and how big it would catch on. Starting with only four teams in 1974, Bacons efforts have since exploded into a virtual soccer mania to where at present AYSO Soccer put less emphasis on winning and more on playing. We also try to balance the teams evenly in talent and we dont like the idea of the player draft system that there are an estimated 700 teams and 8,000 boy and girl participants in northern Utah alone. Soccer is designed for the average athlete with average athletic skills," said Bacon referring to why he thought the sport caught on so quickly. That gives the sport a huge population to draw from and that accounts for the good participation. Another reason why the program has been a success is that AYS rules require that each team have a roster of no more than 15 players and that each player must play at least half of every game. Each kid is out there to learn soccer and have fun, said Bacon. "We try to Round-U- baseball most of the little league programs use. Yeir It's fun, easy to learn and you can outfit an entire team for the price of three football uniforms. In terms of cost, AYS is practically self sufficient as the league is run by don't have enough fields to run our games efficiently and we could really use more volunteers to help out with the paper work, coaching and refereeing the ball games. Bacon says the jobs are not time consuming, theyre easy to learn and provide an excellent way to get out of the house and have fun. Bacon also says that with the extra help he could plan more cultural exchange programs with volunteers, coaches and referees. Most of the equipment costs are covered by the $15 registration fee and the rest comes from sponsorship by non-pai- d The sport itself has grown dramaticly on all levels to a point where most high schools now include it as a major varsity sport. Bacon feels youth soccer programs will enhance participation and expertise on high school levels and because the cost is so low the rosters can be larger. . Soccer is already a major high school sport in Utah, reports Bacon. local businesses which donate goal posts and netting. The only problem with AYS in Utah according to Bacon is trying to keep up with the constant growth of the other countries and have playoff tournaments which at the present time are not possible. Soccer is the number one sport in the world, said Bacon. Theres no language barrier. A kid can come half program. Were going through some growing pains right now, said Bacon. Hunter orange is defined as a fluourescent material. Any other red, orange or yellow clothing does not meet requirements, stress Division of Wildlife Resources officials. Hunters must wear at least 400 square inches of fluourescent hunter orange on their head, chest and back. There has been a significant reduction of mistaken for game hunting accidents since the Fluourescent Hunter Orange Law was instituted in 1975, says Lee Robertson, Division hunter education coordinator. After much use, some fluorescent material loses its fluorescent quality and no longer meets the lawful requirements for hunter orange. For their own safety in the field, hunters should wear a material which still retains a high degree of fluourescence. Hunters should check a big game proclamation for exceptions to the hunter orange law during the muzzleloader season. said Head Utah State has a very strong team, as does BYU and Reno beat UCLA and Stanford last week in their own tournament in Reno, so I look for some good scores and competition. Madsen was extremely happy with Webers third place finish in the Falcon Invitational last week, finishing ahead of teams such as New Mexico, New Mexico State, Wichita State, Tulsa and Utah. I said before we went over, that I would be happy to finish anywhere between fourth and seventh," Madsen said. "So I feel we are jelling together a little bit and if we can get better play out of our fourth and fifth men, we should do much better. I think our soccer in this country can be improved by inviting more experienced soccer countries to5 compete against us. m Another reason why soccer is; becoming a fast hit with parents is that it is safe. In all his years of coaching,' Bacon is only aware of six or seven' serious injuries (mostly broken arms); and all those kids were back playing the next season. Soccer, with all its run- ning, is an excellent way to improve' body vitals and Bacon reports it can; enhance other sports such as track or cross country running.
