Last year, due to an unusually strong storm concentration, nearly 47,000 birds rendezvoused on Utah marshes to find food. Swans are beginning to move into the state now on their migration from Alaska and upper Canada. During their peak stopover period the latter part of November, over 30,000 swans will congregate on northern Utah marshes, predicts Tim Provan, waterfowl biologist. Swan hunting is best from River Bay and Ogden Bay. About 5,000 swans are usually attracted to Ogden Bay, where the majority of the harvest' occurs. This year, 9,264 persons applied for 2,500 swan permits. The harvest has averaged about 900 birds for the last five years. In 1978, 804 swans were harvested. Swan populations in the Pacific Flyway have been at their maximum levels for several years. Therefore, only surplus swans are being harvested. In 1962, after a moratorium on hunting swans in the United States, Utah was the first state to begin issuing swan permits. Since then, swan hunts have been established in Montana and Nevada, where 500 permits are issued in each state yearly. Since the November swan population in Utah is far larger than the number of permits issued, harvesting a swan depends a great deal on getting put to the marshes and hunting, points out A1 Take Region Soccer Stars Upset Rockets of the spotting scope. Family groups are easy to spot since pair ponding in swans is very strong. The information gathered from the counts is compared to data compiled in Alaska so mortality and other factors about swan populations may 'be determined. Permits for hunting or trapping bobcats must be purchased no later than November 14. The bobcat season has been set for December 13,. 1980 to January 31, 1981. The limit is four bobcats. The cost of a bobcat permit is $25. This entitles a permit holder to four possession tags and the first metal tag when a bobcat pelt is brought to a Division office. (For trading and selling purposes, all bobcat pelts must be affixed with a permanent metal tag at a Division office). A fee of $25 will be charged for each of the three additional metal tags. Therefore, the total cost for harvesting a limit of four bobcats is $100. A small game or trapping license must also be purchased, depending on the method used in taking the bobcats. Last year, a total of 1.59T bobcats were harvested in Utah. With the price of bobcat pelts averaging $220, this places a total value for Utahs 1979-8- 0 bobcat harvest at over $350,000.
