A full two games behind league-leadin- g Utah, the Cougars will host the Rebels and Falcons on the floor of the Marriott Center in a split series. Since UNLV is not yet a member of the WAC, Friday nights contest will not have a bearing on the current chase. But the talented Rebels are capable of altering BYUs overall record. On the other hand, the Air Force contest will count in both standings. In fact, the Falcons, who upset UTEP earlier in the season, are expected to use a game against the Cougars on Saturday night. Historical Importance The weekend series will carry some historical importance, since it will be UNLVs first-evgame with the Cougars in Provo and AFAs first .WAC game in the Marriott Center. Earlier in the season the Cougars swept a pair of road games from these two schools, in Colorado beating the Falcons win over Springs, then squeezing out a Las Vegas on the same swing. ball-contr- er 77-6- 5 DGH The pairings are expected to draw capacity crowds both nights, since the BYU fans are anxious to see the Cougars retain an upfront position behind Utah. BYU and Wyoming are currently tied for second-plac- e with league records. The Cougars had a chance to share the lead with Utah last Saturday night, but the Utes managed to extend their win streak with a 5 decision. It was the lowest scoring game between the two schools in 29 years, and the shooting percentages of the two rivals dropped off as well. Although BYU was averaging 50 percent from the field prior to the Utah game, the Mountain Cats could hit only 38 percent in last Saturday nights game in Salt Lake City. Utahs 46 percent was good enough to provide the Utes with the scoring edge, even though they took two less shots. As expected, BYU held a slight ) edge on the boards. In all other respects the two rivals were statistically very close. Coach Frank Arnold, who hasnt dropped two games in a row since December of 1978, hopes to have the Cougars ready for this weekend. That may not be as easy as it sounds, however. 6-- 2 60-5- (39-35- U(o Finn Injured Freshman forward Tim Saarelainen, who appeared in every game this season prior to Utah, injured his foot last week and did not see any action against the Utes. The extent of the damage has not been determined, but Coach Arnold isn t counting on the Finn this week. .' Danny Ainge, who did not have one of his better games against Utah, had only two full practice sessions last week, which was due in part to his recovery from the flu. The however, continues to Cougar be among the nations scoring leaders with his 25.8 per game average. One of the more consistent performers last Saturday night was junior forward Steve Trumbo. Steve was the top rebounder on the floor (16) and contributed 10 points. Trumbos scoring and rebounding averages are now identical, 10.8. Were not out of it (the WAC race) yet," said Coach Frank Arnold, but right now we are going to need some help, if we are to . catch Utah. ' Arnold was obviously distressed at the loss which pushed the Cougars back into second place. rfflllMlIMiffltlaa4l4j yoy . tSujzktfizaii 9.
