KATHERINE BORRETT Dogs have the same demand for a complete and balanced diet with the essential nutrients that people have. Many of the problems we see can be related to an improper diet. Animals expend energy in almost every form of body activity and this energy is obtained from the food or the destruction of their own body tissues as sources of energy. The caloric (energy) requirements are higher on a per pound basis in the smaller versus larger animal and in the growing animal as compared to the mature f ' V dog or cat. Water is the primary essential nutrient and a fresh supply should be available at all times. A dog gets about 25 percent of his requirement from drinking water and should consume about 1 ounce per pound of body Weight per day. The demand for water markedly increases with many conditions of stress such as exercise, fever, kidney disease, and intestinal disorders. ---5 Adult dogs require percent crude protein Z available in their diet. Puppies require 3 percent. Complete proteins must contain the 10 essential -gfnino acids. These are available from milk, eggs, -- meat and soybeans. when you are cooking for a dog you must also fonsider the digestibility of the food presented. Eggs, giuscle meat, and organ meat have a high -digestibility. Legume proteins such as soybeans are only fair, but the other vegetable proteins are poor and tend to overwork the kidneys of the older dog. Milk has a good supply of the dietary essentials but Jmust be fed with considerable caution because the -dog lacks an essential enzyme necessary to digest it, "therefore milk will often cause diarrhea. Fats and oils are essential for a glossy hair coat and supple skin. They are high in energy and have an important effect on the palatability (taste). A small increase in the fat content of a diet will usually increase its acceptability to your pet. Rancid fat sin the diet will block the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E; and K, and lead to a poor dry hair coat, hair loss, itchy, dry scaly skin, skin infections, and loss of appetite. Most commercial Hog foods contain percent fat which has been rancidity by the use of an anprotected against tioxidant. r. Essential fatty acids can be supplemented to the diet by the use of corn oil, olive oil, lard, suet, and raw ;Iinseed oil. 0 2. Dogs can utilize percent of the dietary as an inexpensive source of energy. When . properly prepared carbohydrates are well utilized by normal dogs. Some starches, like those from potatoes, oats, and corn are poorly digested unless they are cooked. High levels of raw starch can often lead to diarrhea. Fiber is also a part of the carbohydrate portion of the diet. Some fiber is digested and used for energy, other fibers absorb water and maintain normal intestinal motility. Minerals are an important part of the diet. The essential minerals required in a dogs diet are calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur, sodium, chloride, potassium, and iron. The essential trace minerals (necessary in a much lower quantity) are copper, manganese, iodine, zinc, and cobalt. Calcium and phorous are necessary for proper bone and teeth development. Vitamin D is . required for the absorption of calcium. The exact requirement for most of the vitamins are not known. The average commercial diet probably contains adequate vitamins for most practical conditions. t, Commercial dog foods are available in dry, and canned forms. Dry foods are most economical because the nutrients have been concentrated and the water removed, but it has a lower palatability or acceptance level especially in the smaller dog. Table scraps are frequently the most palatable but generally not nutritionally balanced. Most table scraps are fats and carbohydrates, yielding lots of calories and little else leading to an obesity problem. As a consequence, the dog obtains a sizeable portion of its daily caloric needs from, scraps and loses his appetite for a commercial balanced diet. Commercial foods are the most economical and safest way to supply the dog with the essential nutrients. A special dietcan be prepared for the older dog with heart or kidney disease, or the dog with intestinal disorders, but you must be careful to proper balance the diet so as not to compound the . problem. Your veterinarian can probably give you some guidelines in preparing a special diet for the finicky eater, the older dog with heart and kidney problems the growing puppy, and the dog recovering from disease or stress. . -- . . 18-2- 25-3- soft-mois- . . 4-- Introducing two newnumbers you can count on for residential service.
