Studies consistently show that the ability of a husband and wife to effectively communicate their feelings is a critical component in marital happiness. Tricia and Pat McGarvey, who live in Roy, had been mar? ried five years when her mother,' Shirley Mitchell, encouraged them to go on a . weekend. Tricia became interested because both her mother and her sister felt it had strengthened their marriages. Pat went because his wife wanted him to go, but felt their marriage was fine the way it was. He was happily surprised to find the weekend increased his satisfaction with his marriage. It gave us a tool we can use to communicate better. Feelings are what a relationship is about and we didnt fully realize they are the bottom line until after the weekend, said McGarvey. After the initial weekend, couples are offered opportunities to continue activities within the Marriage Encounter community. There is a special bond between couples who experience a weekend, explained Alice Wilson. We know we have a home away from home whenever we see the Marriage Encounter symbol or find a 15 OZ.
