Alternatives to Resource Recovery Exist, Says Stable though Stahle said he did not have any firm figures, he said the cost would be much less than a resource recovery plant. Another alternative is a process known as pyralysis. City officials have approved a trip by three city staff members to visit a plant in Laramie, Wyo. that uses the process. Stahle said pyralysis dates back to 1947 when it was used in Europe to power taxis and tanks. The vehicles had a chamber in back that burned charcoal. The garbage is compacted into a small cube. The cube is then placed in a gasifier unit that makes a gas, Stahle said. That has several possibilities in Bountiful. Its clean. We could put a burn facility at the swimming pool and heat the pool from garbage. Its been tried in this country, but not done much, Stahle said. The process though has been used in Japan and in South Africa. The gasifier units arent very big, Stahle said. So this is an area we want to know more about before we make the decision on a resource recovery plant. ' Another area that hasnt been completely explored is the possibility of finding another land- - By RON KNOWLTON Review Staff The chair-ma- n BOUNTIFUL of a committee to study alternatives to a resource re-- .. covery plant for Davis County " claims there are many other " solutions to the countys gar-- . bage problems. The countys landfills still have considerable life left, so I theres still time to look into the -alternatives and perhaps find t the one that would be the most I efficient and economically feasible to operate, said Dean Stahle, chairman of the com-- t mittee and Bountiful City may- or, who isnt yet convinced that a resource recovery plant is the best solution to the. countys waste disposal problems. Stahle said all the answers hrent in yet on the resource recovery plant. And most of the t assumptions made by backers bf the plant come from est- -- imates, not solid facts, he claims. Because of many problems ithat Bountiful city officials 'foresee with a resource recov-- ; ery plant, the city has taken a - fcloser look at some of the more attractive alternatives. : One alternative that is in the 'beginning stages is a process that extracts ethanol from garbage. The garbage does not fburn, but glucose and ethanol ; hre extracted through the process. There is a pilot plant that is attempting to use the process ; in Ogden. A study by a &B : sc TKTti California engineering firm shows the BARD has about 15 more years of life left at its present usage. With a resource recovery plant, a landfill would still be needed, Stahle said, because a certain percentage of garbage such as old appliances, Vf. A con- crete, and metal cannot be , burned. ....... Stahle admitted that there probably arent very many sites in south Davis County that could be used for a landfill, but without a thorough study we dont know for sure. If most of the communities in the south end of the county opt for resource recovery plant, there is the possibility Bountiful could terminate its lease with BARD and take over operation of BARD. But this is a possibility discounted by several BARD board members. Palmquist said the issue ultimately may need to be decided in court. But Palmquist said he feels the BARD board is on pretty solid legal ground. I hope were not talking lawsuits, Stahle said. Stahle said there has been talk of putting a plant in Davis County. The plant would be much closer to Bountiful than I the resource recovery plant, if it Js located where Stahle believes ' it would go. He did not disclose j'any proposed location for the plant, however. The plant does not burn anything all it puts ;iout is steam, Stahle said.
