The city council vote to rezone passed by a split three to two. 1 Council members had no ar- gument with the development and the number of lots to be located on the 15.56 acres, but council members David Connois and Pat Achter felt uncomfortable about the council voting on the issue before the planning commission questions were resolved. She also wanted a part-tim- e job that got her out of the house at least tw ice a month. She is the mother of a small girl and a baby boy. She said she is always surprised at how well candles sell. Ol Jc illage is owned by Mont and Soma Max-fiel- d of Salt Lake City. They make all of the candles in their garage. About 2,500 candles are sold each month throughout the W est. Soma Maxfield said. Their company is one of many candle businesses in Utah. The Olde Village candles come in the popular cylinder shape in 6- -, 16- - and sizes, as well as m the square shape that is 28 ounces. There are decora tive candles available as well. Anything you can dream up can be made into a candle, Ellison said. The scents range from midnight jasmine to orange dreamsidc. There are 36 scents to chose from, LJlison said. Scents affect people's mind, she said. Maxfield agrees. She said in studies she has read the sense of smell is the strongest sense humans have. A smell can either trigger good memoncs or bad ones. People want to remember their grandma's house, she said. Candles are a way of bringing those memories into a hectic lifestyle, Maxfield said. The popular scents depend on the season. During the winter holidays, holiday spice scented candles sold very well, Maxfield said. During the summer lilac and mango peach have been hard to keep in stock, she said. I llison said she has a hard time getting lilac and cinnamon roll scented candles because of a television report that claimed these two scents can get a man in an amorous mood. I llison said. Ellison said her mom hkes candles, too, not for the scent but for the decoration. She has candles m her home that have never been burned.
