Show Lakeside Review TX.LAKESIDE Teen calls for R.E.S.P.E.C.T. for all Trends By LORI ANN EGGLESTON From 6 For those more sophisticated or classy occasions you might want to consider the new slim silver mint PEZ. There are also motorized PEZ dispensers for those that are interested in high-tec- h material. Dont settle for a dispenser until you are completely satisfied. As time goes on your collection will likely grow and you will be free to rotate dispensers as you please. Many teens believe that giving away PEZ is easy but in truth, it takes a lot of practice and concentration. In the beein TX. some problems the rest of us do not usually think about, such as walking, running, thinking quickly or speaking. At the Olympics, I was able to sit down and talk to many different handicapped people, and work with them as they bowled for the gold. I found that these are people with normal, everyday concerns. True, these are concerns normal teens would have worried about years ago, but that does not make their worries any less real. Not many people realize how special these kids are, says Nancy Perkins, a senior at Northridge High who also volunteers her time with disabled students. They would understand this if they just took the time to get to know them. Teenagers need to take a step back and really look at the big picture. Think about how you act at school. I hate it when people make fun of me, says Jason, whose name was changed for this article. It makes me mad because everything they say isnt correspondent S- 6. e, 0 if it it ' d it Disabled people are just that type of person. What does it matter that they are a little different from the rest of us "normal people? One of the labels many adults put on us teenagers is that we are very judgmental. Unfortunately, this is very true. For the most part, teens do judge a book by its cover a lot, especially with our handicapped peers. This semester, I had the opportunity to work with the ' special needs students at my school, and I also volunteered at the Utah Special Olympics. I d that quickly learned handicapped people truly are regular people - they just have - another - ' e1' " 1 1. d ).; ' first-han- 11 V Thursday. The cruelty in this world will not stop until someone takes a stand against it. The Golden Rule has been around for thousands of years, so why dont people - especially teenagers -start following it? What I have learned by helping the special needs kids is that they really are normal people, said Joni Rich, a junior at Northridge High School who is also a volunteer. Sure, they do have problems, but everyone has problems. It makes me really mad when people make fun of handicapped people. I dont know why they just cant treat people with respect. I promise you will feel a lot better about yourself if you treat others with respect instead of contempt. After all, isnt respect what we are always demanding from our parents? . Lori Eggleston, a senior at Northridge High School, plays piano and particpates in theater. s true. Jason is an with Down syndrome. whose Susan, a name also has been changed, says she hates going in rooms with a lot of people in them. They will make fun of me, she says. I hate people. They are mean to me. I will admit that I was a little afraid at first when I started helping with the special needs class. I wasn't sure if I would know how to help them with some of their problems. ctMOu& I ning, things might not go as smoothly as you originally planned. Because of this, it is a good idea to try a few practice runs or role plays with family members. Once you get confident feel free to take things to a higher level. PEZ is a trend that is sweeping high schools all over the world. It is a fun way to make people smile and makes your own day better. Girls CD sell-out- s. sell-out- s. dance their way onto every magazine cover and talk show that this gossip-fille- d nation has to offer deserves some credit. The most incredible part is that the Spice Girls have reached the top without having a single bit of talent They are having fun and loving life, and whats wrong with that? They just happen to be five rich girls who were brought together to sing really crappy, catchy songs. They definitely are careerist. They showcase their "goodies targeting males to watch their videos, or maybe just buy the CDs, but I have never met a guy who would actually admit to owning one. They always say its their little sisters. y Some bands cross over the careerist lines and mingle with the sacred. The Rolling Stones, for example, are the cliche of the slogan, sex, drugs and rock and happy-go-luck- Keith Richards still looks good in purple leather pants. In the old days they stood for sex, drugs and rock and roll, but now they stand for . cold hard cash. I guess they couldn't pass up the chance to grab a few more dollars before they are constricted to wheelchairs. A band that can pick you up, wrap you around and throw you back down feeling better or worse than you did before, a band with soul - now that is sacred band. B.B. King, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Sonic Youth, Beck and the Smashing Pumpkins are bands that havent sold their sacred art form. They still have their head and have in some way changed the style of music forever - not with a single number one but with the ability to endure, and thats what makes anything sacred. But if you don't mind a band that can smile and look good in tight clothing, then dont be ashamed of listening to it. A man can never stand prouder than when he can admit to loving the Spice Girls in public. Jake Parkinson, a senior at Bountiful High School, plays six musical instruments. am a former student of Sunset Junior High, and up until a few weeks ago I felt relatively safe. On March 16 my friend and I were assaulted with a knife. We were just bangin out talking, and an individual I am acquainted with walked in from outside and tried two times to jam a sharpened piece of old sheet metal into my abdomen. He had little success; I only had two minor puncture wounds and minor bleeding. As he left, he kicked the door and broke the hinge. The door was open and my friend said, Why did you break the door, it didnt do anythe thing to you. He building, grabbed my friend by the throat, carried him ten feet, slammed him into a wall, kicked him in the stomach and also tried to stab him in the stomach. They called the individual to the office. He came out of the office, walked up to me and said "'a A you, I didn't break the Sd&'d door, turned and with a sweeping motion kicked me in combat the shin with steel-toe- d boots in front of six members of the administration. The police were called and he spent one day in jail, two days in suspension, severe, more frequent assaults and we still dont have an officer. What will it take? The hostage incident at Syracuse, a gun at a school in Salt Lake, and the recent ambush in Arkansas are really making me wonder if schools and two weeks of (his choice) and returned to home-stud- y e school with a supervisor whom Ive never seen - al though we were told, by the vice principal, that he was a threat to the school and would not be allowed back. School officials since that have done nothing to protect me. They say they rely on students to bring problems to them. What if one day someone isnt alive to bring them a problem? I have been receiving threats the principal past week; the says it is not against the law for them to threaten me with bodily harm. THAT'S WRONG!! The hostage situation at Syra cuse, a school which I attended from August to November, was e serious, but they get a police officer? Whose brilliant idea was that? So why are teens made fun of, to the point that they become closet listeners because of what they choose to listen to? There are two types of bands: those that are part of the music industry because music is sacred to them, and those who qre there to have fun and make money. , Some people automatically hate bands that are there for the fame and fortune. They call them careerist, trendy, Well, theyre right. They are singing for one reason. To make money. The Spice Girls are a supreme example. They are in it for the money and the smiles and could care less what people say about them. And they are raking in the dough.
