Oscar-winnin- and d to serve your city By ANGIE DRIGGS Batman: At least it Action-packe- Tull of corny dialogue, this Batman and Robin scores great on adventure but the acting is not so favorable. The good guys ; Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (Chris ODonnell) are dressed in characteristic rubber suits that exaggerate their overall body figure and give them a cartoon look. They chase around Mr. Freeze, (Arnold Schwarzenegger) whose dialogue is limited to simple puns, all based around his ability to freeze anything in sight with his special gun. Freezes costume looks like he used something left over from his movie Terminator, and as with that movie and all of his others, Schwarzenegger was not hired for his ability to act, but for sheer bulk size. Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) is a disgruntled botanist who wants nothing more than for plants to rule the earth again without humans at all. Her magic love charms are her best chance at luring the caped crusaders away from their job to get a kiss from her venomous lips. Alfreds niece also shows up, and before long she ends up as Batgirl (played by Alicia Silverstone). She saves the day right as Batman and Robin get trapped and gives the final boost to overturn all evil in the city of Gotham. Alfred is the live-i- n housekeeper. The special effects and d action are what to look forward to. A youth city council is an opportunity for teens to participate in their community and take part in service activities that will benefit their community. Thc council has a teen mayor and teen board members, and follows the actions of an adult city council. Advisers and council members from the city sponsor members of the youth council and help provide opportunities for teens to develop mature citizenship and leadership qualities, personal achievement, and an understanding of government procedures. Through service and work, youth on councils strive for character and a powerful voice in the city. Syracuse City is just one city with a youth council that has been active. The council members work to improve the city and include all youth, not just those on the youth council. They are very selective about new members, but add that they try to give everyone a chance. Syracuse teen Jcnnika Thurgood, 17, is currently serving as youth mayor on the Syracuse council. With obvious love for her city and enthusiasm for her job, she described one project the council has been working on. To support National Service Day April 26, our council made arrangements to repair the citys rodeo grounds," she said. We should have a lot of youth participation throughout the summer. The Syracuse rodeo grounds have become an eyesore, covered with overgrown grass and weeds. Garbage is scattered across the entire lot and a few rusting garbage cans are overflowing. Well-use- d fences and bleachers have become extremely a IX ! service. Community the phrave into the hearts of those teens lacking attendance credit, but to many Utah teens the words "community service" means much more. For example, last summer the teen members of the Youth Volunteer Corps of America volunteered a total of 1,378.3 community hours. Many of these teens joined the YVCA simply to have more organized opportunities to serve others in need. The YVCA operates in conjunction with Weber Human Services and also works with organizations such as the U.S. Forest Service and ! Ogden City Parks and Recreation Department. Beginning June 23 and running until Aug. 13, summer volunteer projects are held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Last summer YVCA projects included gardening at the Utah State University Botanical Gardens, setting up . volleyball courts for the American Volleyball Association national tournament, repairing water . heaters for the elderly and , , assisting with golf tournaments at Wolf Creek Golf Course in Ogden Canyon and the Country Club Golf Course in Ogden. Activities such as roller skating, volleyball and swimming are held as rewards for the youth volunteers. Youth from all areas of Weber County are eligible to participate and must fill out an application, which can be obtained by calling Barbara Teigeler at the Volunteer Center, Another summer community service experience can be found at Your Community Connection in Ogden. The YCC Youth Council meets once a month . s, to plan service projects and activities for teens in the YCC Youth Corps. Youth Corps volunteer members have opportunities to play with children at Open Gym Night every Monday and Wednesday, help out at parties or trips to the zoo with local schoolchildren, support troubled teens by working on the Teen Crisis Line, a YCC hotline that runs throughout See SERVE12 i 1 ArA - I - jT ' vi k ' - t Jb g i . Weve endured the hot summer sun to watch our big league heroes play. Weve gone to and played in Little League games. We may have even umpired a game or two. It seems that everyone has been raised around baseball, one of Americas most cherished and storied traditions. So, if everyone loves baseball so much, then why do we all play softball? Thats an easy answer. The big ball and the slow pitching that provide for hours of excitement, thats why. high Softball is a fantastic summertime activity. It may not be Americas pastime, but its a way for those of us who cant hit a fastball or throw a baseball a mile to go out and have some fun in a similar game. For run-scori- 75-m- If youre looking to get involved, there are several leagues and teams that you softball nuts can take a swing at. Most cities usually offer recreation teams in several different categories ranging from co-e- d to almost dead. City leagues can be a fun way to get involved with the sport this summer. Another way to get involved is on a church or religious group team. Church teams also have several different categories, so that almost everyone can get involved. The church teams are good for those of you who arent interested in shelling out the big bucks to knock around the big ball on a recreation team. Church teams are a blast to play on because we all know that people who participate in church athletics are the best good sports around, right? Last but not least, theres always work teams. You know, the teams that if you dont win any games, your boss might come up with some lame reason to fire you. I know thats not the case for most of the work teams, but for some teams that is exactly the case. For example, it always seems that there is a team or two that has to beat every team they play by the slaughter rule, or those really big guys they hire just before softball season go into raging fits, with saliva flying through the air and foam lines their mouth. Thats not a pretty sight. Ill tell you that much. Summer softball is a fun and exciting way to get involved with your community, church or place of employment. This summer, if you get sick of watching the daytime talk shows and checking the mail every hour, then getting involved with softball is a great way to beat the heat and the big ball.
