Post Commander Richard Fisher announced today that the Legion has embarked on a nationwide drive to inform parents about this malady which some doctors have labeled, the polio of the 80s. Reyes (pronounced ryes) Syndrome is a comlike flu, measles, plication of a viral infection chicken pox, whose cause and prevention are unknown. It affects normal, active, primarily healthy children 18 and younger. It is swift and deadly, but not contagious. In a matter of days it can kill or cripple nearly half of its victims, Fisher stated. The key to surviving RS lies in early detection and treatment. In survival, order to provide the best chances for parents must know what to look for and what to do when RS is suspected. Usually a child appears to be recovering from a viral infection when the first signs of RS occur in the form of recurrent, relentless vomiting which may be followed by personality changes, headache, and restlessness. A child who is recovering from a viral illness should be observed carefully. If RS is suspected, the parent should contact a physician immediately or take the child to a hospital emergency room. Quick action is imperative in order to give the RS victim the greatest opportunity for recovery. A pioneer of many programs to benefit children The physically, spiritually and emotionally American Legion, and its auxiliary, have accepted the challenge of this public information campaign to alert parents to this malady, Fisher explained. tj t u e -- . me iviuuiu uguen fusiiiiei uuu iu$o icavuwv ur "ivi7e; vnt.u years to the city and PnftheMonth bv similar offerings in previous en- said he would She attends North Layton Junior High School, n nirth ?raode- k Cnionpp rinh tie Guild Jr. High BYF, Harmonettes Choir and Girl Scouts.
