There werent any seven footers in the line-uand no move-in- s of tiny consequence, but there was a lot of hustle on the floor, and unlike last year, there was some experienced varsity talent for the 1980-8- 1 season. Four players, who started at one time or another, are suited up this year to play for Roy, including Rob Thomas, Steve Scholtec, Bob Kirkwood and Brad McCaulley. Thomas grew an inch in the and is now listed at 6?. He played center last year, and averaged 11.5 points per game. Thomas, with his height, was Roys leading rebounder last year. He is effective from the fifteen to seventeen foot range, and tough inside. r, Scholtec is an excellent and good shooter. He averaged six points per game last year. He was especially strong in the assist department. Steve is 64f tall and will play as a forward. Bob Kirkwood has good penetration, and can hit the open shot. He played tough defense, last year, was an excellent free-throshooter and averaged five points : , per game. Brad McCaulley, at 58, will best be known as for the Royals. Brad has good quickness and is a good shooter, as well as being an outstanding ball handler Brad started Roys last four games, last year, and averaged three points per game for the season. Jed Porter, at 62 is a strong contender for the starting lineup. Jed, a senior, came to Roy from Brighton High School, when he was a sophomore. He is an excellent outside shooter, and is known by his teammates jas The Zone Buster.!' Mike Reske holds the high jump record at Roy High School, ana uses his leaping ability as an all around basketball player; He has good touch on the court, , and shows a lot of promise. Troy Thompson, at 57, is smallest of the Royals; but the fastest. He is a demon on defense, and is a deadly shooter and a good driver. Troy, like Kirkwood, McCaulley and Porter, is a senior at Roy. Bart Hadley is 64 tall and weighs 200 pounds. Coach Smith has big plans for Hadley for inside play. Hadley is skilled in positioning himself for ding and can hit the 15 foot jumper. Lance Jorgenson shows a lot of leadership play on the guard-lin- e and has good basketball sense. He is a Lefty and a good shooter. Reed Newey is only a sophomore, but already has caught the coaches eye. Newey is 63 tall and is a great shooter. He has good basketball savy, and promises to be a good one at Roy High. Wade Jacklin led the Royals in football, and is now He has quickness, using his skills on the hard-wood' and is tough on defense. team-leade- r, s: 1980-8- 1 .Jason Wheelwright is 51 tall and has great determination. He has the tools to be a great one in a Royal uniform. Backing up the varsity are Robert Dance, Jed Jones, Jim Colby, Chris Colohan, Darren Cutler, Mike Harris, Jeff White, Chris Checkjetts, and Tom Nigon. Van Hadley coaches the J.V. team and assists coach Smith with the varsity. Fred Thompson is also an assistant to Smith, and coaches the sophomores. The sophomore squad , at this writing, is still being organized. On the varsity and junior varsity team, Smith is carrying four seniors, eleven juniors and four sophomores. Coach Ted Smith began his basketball life at North Cache High School, where he was named honorable mention. He was recruited to play for Southern Utah State College, which at that time was a two-yeschool. He earned recognition at SUSC, and then went to Utah State. As an Aggie, Smith was named on the team, two years running. He began his coaching career in the Granite School District, before coming to Roy Junior High School. After five years as the Redskin Mentor, he coached at Sand Ridge for two years, and then took the headcoaching job at Roy High School in 1972. As a Royal, Teds teams have won 102 and lost 64. Coach Smith is high on this years crop of he said of this youngsters. They are winners, years seniors and juniors. They proved themselves, as a class and as a team in going to the finals in football, and hopefully we can do the same (or better) in basketball, this year and next. all-sta- te ar Reske, Steve Scholtec, Robb Thomas, Bart Hadley, Reed Newey, Jed Porter, and Coach Van Hadley. This years football success is the best thing that could have happened to Roy High School," he said, Those kids have learned what it means to win, and it will show up on the basketball court. Ted lists all twelve of his varsity players as potential starters, but has eight presently battling for a starting position. The Royals will go on display this Friday at Highland High School and next Friday at Ogden. Their first home game will be against East on Saturday, November 29. Smith tabs East High and Bingham School as the teams to beat in Utah, this year and in Region One he put the jinx on Bonneville and Weber, and lists as dark horses, the teams of Clearfield, Layton, and Sky View! He wouldnt commit himself for Roy in the Region One standing, but he has plans of being near the top. The Royals should have a good year, with four strong seniors, and a class of juniors with talent to spare. Coach Smith could start three or even four n this season. For the 1980-8- season, Region One will have one team in the quarter-finaland the second, third and fourth place teams will have to play-of- f with runner-u- p teams from Region Two and Region Three. Twelve teams will compete for state honors, in March, at the University of Utah. This years Royals have great potential. They are tall, good shooters, have good speed, and have defensive clout. They started late because of the Royal football fortunes, but should soon be at full GRAND OPENING!! steam.
