One is a newly created position on the citys police department and the other is a seat on the city council. Councilman Bruce Watkins has resigned from the city council and will be leaving the city next week for a new banking position in Vernal, Utah. Watkins is in the last year of his second term on the Sunset Council. His replacement will serve the remainder of his term which expires Dec. 31. Mayor Norm Sant said he would like to see a woman fill the position. Id like to see some ladies apply. We get just as many ladies complaining as the men, he said. Sant told the council the police department is unable to keep up with their work load and are not able to do more than initial followups on a number of cases. The council unanimously approved the hiring of a . new police officer. Sant told them he would hope this ' would allow one person in the department to remain on investigations full time. IPOI Getting Ready For the Quake Know what to do in the event of an or nuclear attack, and discuss it with earthquake : ; KAYSVILLE -- family members, John Zippro, director of Davis County Emergency Services, told a recent gathering of the Kiwanis Gub of Kaysville. During an earthquake, dont move around. Many people are injured or killed from falling debris while moving around. If outside, stay outside. Stay away from walls. The walls of homes collapse outward, he said. If inside, stand under an inside doorway, wall or table. If in the basement, stand by an outside wall or by the foundation. -- After an earthquake, turn off all water valves and gas lines. Also, turn off the main electrical breaker switch. Electrical and gas fires, and contaminated 'water are common after earthquakes. Zippro encouraged the Kiwanians to tie down or boit major appliances to the wall. It is not uncommon for a house to tilt and cause appliances, bookcases, and other unattached items from sliding across the floor. Zippro also encouraged club members to prepare for nuclear attack by building a bomb shelter which he said will greatly increase the chance of survival. Since the federal government does not provide sufficient funds for community shelters, it is up to the individual to prepare the shelter and supply it. The U.S.S.R., he said, spends $18 per capita annually on civil defense to the U.S.s 50 cents. He said there is a contingency plan to evacuate the county if there is a 72 hour notice before a nuclear attack and urged people to have a 72 hour emergency kit ready at all times. The kit should include food, blankets, and personal items. Zippro, who grew up in Holland during the Nazi occupation of that country, said he is speaking from personal experience when it comes to survival.. :4od CASE SIZE 10.75 OZ.
