This is tho second in o series of Teaching children values is looked on by many as something that comes automatically or something that is so hard that they dont even want to think about it. The Parent Education Re source Center of the Davis ,;- jm succeeded, he said. My main goal is to whet their appetite. Teaching school is a real chalwere lenge today because fighting all kinds of things kids have today that we didnt have when I went to school. When Vendetti went to school there were no stereos, no television sets, no transistors, no help him act out an event in School District developed some tips to incorporate in teaching a sound value system to children. While many may be common place, others will need additional work and concentration to develop. - Individuals should try to build and maintain a positive relationship with the child. Be the kind of person you want your child to be. Children can easily tell the difference between words and actions. Example is a great teaching tool. Parents should reinforce in children the values they want them to have. Share with them what you feel is acceptable. Then let the child feel your appreciation and approval when they make acceptable choices. Look for and take advantage of the every day teaching opportunities. Rather than saying dont do that, help the child see the consequences of behavior as well as other alterna- tiV6Se Parents should express their own values openly and honestly with their children and then live those values. By keeping current with the childs friends, you will know where they are coming from. Then if a conflict comes, reemphasize your own values and explain why you have chosen them. Problem solving should be taught at an early age. Let children make decision whenever possible. Dont assume their responsibilities. Let them experience some of the lumps and bumps of life. Ask questions rather than preaching. Get the child to think for himself. By developing good listening skills and hearing the childs side, you can help keep communication open. Never give up. Strive to keep the relationship alive even during the bad times. Dallef Classes Held M Davis U. of U.
